Two sleep-deprived, toddler-juggling mamas just got nominated for the Women's Enterprise Scotland Digital Business of the Year Award 💃🎉🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Kay and I have been running our online Scotland travel planning workshops for almost 5 years now - and we are SO delighted to be nominated for this work (and alongside some incredible company!).

No one sees the behind-the-scenes of what it takes to run a business.

The countless hours at the laptop, fuelled by caffeine and passion.

Add on the responsibility of a tiny human being that requires every ounce of your being, childcare that costs more than the moon, the carousel of viruses and bugs…it’s exactly as fun and easy as it sounds!!!

What we are doing is so new - we first had the idea to take travel planning online after the 2020 Pandemic - everyone was on Zoom then, and it became our ‘normal’ way to communicate.

Together, we launched the Planning a trip to Scotland online course - the first of its kind. With 70+ short videos, it walks planners through planning their dream holiday from start to finish. It has helped over 500 travellers to date.

We started our online workshops when I (Yvette) was pregnant, and we hosted our first destination-based workshops when I was six weeks postpartum. Activating a single brain cell was such a challenge for me back then - but I did it!

We’ll be swapping 🍼 for 🥂 to celebrate our nomination at the awards ceremony, which will be held in Glasgow this October!

We spent a week in the Scottish Highlands...and it rained almost the entire time ☔

This isn't uncommon - and luckily I know Scotland well enough by now that I always have some indoor activities tucked up my sleeve!

We ended up having an amazing week - and embraced moments of rain to relax at our accommodation, read, nap, and play with Alex.

If you're visiting the Highlands and want to know my secrets for making a rainy day fun, I've included some really good tips in this post- so read to the end!

Last month, we had a wonderful family holiday and spent time in Lochaber (Spean Bridge, Fort William) and Argyll (Oban, the Slate Islands and Loch Melfort).

Rain was forecast for the entire week - all apart from one day. We were travelling with our 3.5-year-old and our dog, Angus, so we had to get creative!

I made a list of all the indoor activities I could think of, and planned our itinerary around the rain.

The thing is, when it rains in Scotland, it usually passes pretty quickly (and then reappears quickly again!) so I was checking the forecast throughout the day to find dry spots for our outdoor activities, and organise our meals or indoor activities when it was pouring.

Sometimes we embraced the rain - wee Alex loves jumping in puddles after all 💦

And if there's a place to get cosy and warm inside while the weather has a toddler tantrum, it's a Highland pub!

Here are my tips for planning a Scotland trip around the rain...

☔ Check the forecast before your trip, then check 24 hours in advance. The weather is constantly changing, so keep checking back for updates.

☔ I check a variety of weather platforms, including BBC Weather and Met Office, to get an all-round view of the weather.

☔ Look at the hourly forecast - it may show rain in the morning, but a dry, sunny afternoon. Plan your activities accordingly.

☔ Stay in accommodation that's enjoyable to spend time in. We stayed at Spean Lodge near Fort William, and it was our home away from home!

I've shared our itinerary on my website - it includes all our rain-friendly activities, as well as a day trip to an island when the weather was behaving itself.

What to do when it’s raining in the Scottish Highlands 🌧️

We had the best stay at Spean Lodge (gifted) - having a spacious place to bring activities indoors made such a difference to our trip!

I love the Lower Falls in Fort William after rainfall - you can literally park next to the falls so you’re not outside for too long.

Also a trip to West Highland Museum and the Clan Cameron Museum are a great way to avoid the rain and get your history fix!

With a toddler and a dog, may I add.

A week in my life… ✍️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I’ll be honest… every week looks a bit different for me, so this should really be titled “An average week in my life during July”.

But here is a snapshot into what I’ve been upto lately, and I hope it gives you a slight idea about what I do.

WHAT I LEFT OUT (the unsexy bits I didn’t have photos for)

- the never ending pile of laundry
- the weekly mental breakdown trying to juggle a business and a stubborn toddler
- the doom-scrolling when my brain up and dies on me

I love my job. I love my life. But it’s also fecking hard sometimes. I work my butt off, and while my life as a full-time travel writer may look super fun, 90% of the time I can’t be arsed washing my hair.

Sometimes I even scream into a pillow.

But that content is for subscribers only 😉

Just kidding. I really love what I do, and I have plenty of wisdom to share, so if you’re trying to make it as a travel writer, follow me, and pop your question below!
