The Osprey Company

The Osprey Company The Osprey Company is a family run business & are specialist sign-makers based in the beautiful Northumberland countryside, next to the River Till.

Over 30 years, we have built up a wealth of experience in this field, with many clients throughout the U.K. and hundreds of projects completed. During that time, we have been asked to produce signs in a wide diversity of styles and formats and have learned what works best in given situations. The careful choice of materials, format, style and colours can help signs blend sympathetically with the s

urrounding landscape. However, at the same time, it is important that they should be clearly seen and able to do the job for which they are intended. Signs should be easily accessible to the intended audience and capable of withstanding the elements and any mistreatment they might be subjected to. Finding the right balance to all of these important criteria is not always straightforward but we have the experience and skills to make the correct choices and help our clients find the right solutions to their signage and interpretative requirements. This page shows you just some of our work over the years. You can also find a numbered gallery on our website; so if any of them in particular catch your eye, please get in touch and we will be able to give an indication of costs for something similar. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us, we are always keen to help.

Our latest interpretive panel, installed yesterday on the site of Haddington Abbey which was home to a community of Cistercian nuns for over 400 years. As there now very little left on site to show the scale of the establishment, part of our brief was to produce a 'reconstruction' illustration showing how it would have looked when still in use, with the Abbey Church, cloister, chapter house, refectory and the other ecclesiastical buildings. Scans of the site have also shown that there were storage vaults beneath the refectory which we were able to show using 'cut-away' areas in the illustration. Produced for Haddington's History Society.

Just received this photo from The Friends of Newton Community Park in Newton with Scales, near Preston, of some of our newly installed Nature Watch panels and rubbing plaques, which we supplied last week for their nature area. One of our larger "Bug Hotel" panels on the roof of the aptly named "Crawl Inn" in the background!

Two new boards we've just produced for locations along the River Till, not far from our base at Etal. One is all about St Mary's Chantry Chapel which once stood just a few hundred yards from our workshop and the other tells the story of the old barley mill, the ruins of which can be seen a bit further along the footpath. Produced for Ford and Etal Estates.

A map of the Ross of Mull that we have recently designed and produced at a size of 1.8m wide x 1.45m deep. It is to be installed on the wall of the ferry terminal at Fionnphort, from where the ferry crosses to the Isle of Iona and boats sail to visit Staffa. The map has been designed to highlight the many other attractions to be found in the area around the village and in South West Mull generally.

Photographed whilst walking at Bamburgh over the Christmas holidays - a couple of interpretive panels we produced around 15 years ago for mounting on stone plinths just up from the shore. Great to see that they are still in good condition after such long exposure to the coastal environment and weather. No real signs of fading or rust on the frames and good for a few more years yet!

A job we produced about a year ago for the site of the the old First World War Prisoner of War Camp at Stobs, south of Hawick, but which has only recently been installed. First opened as an army training camp in 1903, it became and internment camp for foreign 'aliens' at the outbreak of war and then held over 4500 mainly German POWs between 1915 and 1919. The work involved producing two different interpretive panels complete with oak lecterns. Carried out for Archaeology Scotland.

Two new interpretation boards we designed and produced recently for the village of Cove on the Berwickshire Coast. That section of coastline is significant as being the place where, in 1788, James Hutton "the father of modern geology" established his "Theory of the Earth" which first explained how rock formations develop over much longer periods of time than most people then believed.

The panels explain the geology of the coastline and also show some of the wildlife that people might see whilst walking on the coastal path. One of the boards features samples of the three major types of rock found there which helped Hutton prove his theory. We designed the timber supports too.
