It’s time to hang up my headset. I’ve worked for John Lewis Partnership for eight years now and I can honestly say it has been the best job I’ve had. I’ve made some wonderful friends, met some fascinating customers, and some awful ones. I have delighted some with my excellent customer service skills, and appalled others with the worst service they’ve ever received. I’ve laughed uproariously with partners and customers and I’ve cried in the lift lobby after helping some customers who were in a very difficult place.

I’ve had two major operations since I joined the Partnership and now have fewer body parts than I started with. John Lewis have always been incredibly supportive and have helped me to keep going for as long as I have. Now, I have to admit that I can’t keep up with the pace any more. I don’t want to go, but I need to. I have been changed by this job, and have some wonderful memories that I will always treasure.

I’m still doing my Colour and Style work, I just need to slow down a bit. If you’d like to figure out whether dungarees work for you or, need help to find the right look for an interview/ wedding/award ceremony or just every day comings and goings, I’m your woman.

I’m doing my last colour workshop today so I thought I’d go out with a flourish and wear my .and.the.whale earrings. I’m still doing all my other colour and style consultations, I just can’t cope with groups nowadays. I need to recognise my limitations and be the best I can be on a more one to one basis.

With the help of my son and counselling, I have finally realised that I am neurodivergent. This has been a revelation combined with grief that I didn’t know this a very long time ago. One of the important things that has emerged is that I had nowhere to escape to when the overwhelm and meltdowns hit. Once I understood how critical this was, I hit hyperfocus and decorated a mostly unused room in our house in 6 weeks from start to finish. Colour is a huge driver for me and I wanted somewhere that almost felt womb like to envelop me when I feel battered by trying so hard to fit in. I feel so protected here that I’m beginning to be able to explore my painting once more, I’m back to dipping my paintbrush in my tea, not eating or going to the loo for hours and forgetting all the other things I need to do but I feel free to be myself and that’s incredible.
