Medieval Mystification

Have you ever been mystified by a medieval coin? We certainly have. What does that legend read? Is it Latin? What’s the mint-mark? Whose portrait is that? Is that a mythical beast? What do those pellets mean? And even if you can identify it, how would you grade it? What about flan size, weak strikes, off-centre strikes, splits? Even if it looks a bit rough, is it actually good for issue?

Fortunately, help is at hand. On June 9, the Crewe Society’s own Jonathan Morris will be drawing on his personal knowledge to explain the mysteries of "Identifying and Grading Medieval Coins". His talk should be of interest to numismatists, historians, archaeologists and metal detectorists.

The Crewe and District Coin and Medal Society meets most months of the year, on the second Tuesday. As well as the spring and autumn coin fairs, every year the society puts on a diverse programme of talks, a quiz, show and tell sessions and a private museum visit which, this year, will be to the Chester Military Museum. By the way – as the knowledgeable readers of COIN NEWS will quickly have worked out - the illustrated coin is a denier struck by Edward, Duke of Aquitaine and Gascony (later Edward I of England) at the Bordeaux Mint during the lifetime of his father Henry III.
