AI this, AI that...
.. and I'm out here talking about asking your customers to say thank you in writing.

This series is all about taking a business from zero inbound business via the internet to £1 million a year.

There is simply no feasible way that will be achievable without getting them organised to collect reviews.

Here's a weird thing:

According to BrightLocal, who did a big survey across the US, 97% of people will check reviews when considering buying a service.

That's not the weird thing, but what is strange to me is that among that 97% must be some of the wonderful business owners that I meet.

Business owners who treat reviews as a little bit embarrassing to ask for and often just don't get around to it. Well, not until they meet me, they don't!

We've not only built systems that automate the ask, but we've also carefully studied the form of language, the design of the email, and the timing of the ask to know exactly how to optimise this for people.

Here's one important tip. When you ask for a review, get people to talk about your service. Perhaps even mention the price, because otherwise people will say things like "it was great" without adding anything that's really helpful for those reading the review

Today's the day. Have a look at your reviews and get serious about getting them. Oh, and by the way, yes, you do need to reply to every one!

Two and a half hours into a Diagnosis call.

Ginny is still under the desk. He approves of the funnel. He does not approve of cold leads.

AI this, AI that..... and I'm out here talking about your domain name like it's 2002.

I'm covering every single scrappy detail of taking a business from zero inbound web leads to a £1 million-a-year business so I do have to mention the domain name.

Changing a domain name is a big deal and is absolutely not recommended if you've been up and running for some time.

If you're starting a new business or, like this one, have zero traffic, it might be something you need to look at to get that consistency in naming right across the internet.

The goal is one consistent name across every social platform, every review platform, your website, your legal name, your URL, the whole thing.

This company luckily had pretty much zero traffic, and weirdly, their previous SEO agency had somehow taken ownership of their URL, which is a whole other story that I'm sure I'll go into at some stage.

Absolutely never hand over your URL to anyone.

The AI Sales and Service Engine. Pillar 4 of the Blueprint.

Answers every inbound call and DM 24/7. Books the diagnosis. Updates the CRM. Reports usage weekly.

Most service businesses lose half their leads after 5pm. This is the cheapest fix once the trust-signal work is in.

Save the carousel. Send it to your operations lead.

Five client diagnoses queued for the week.

Each one starts with the 5-step audit. Trust signals. Schema. Reviews. Funnel. Author authority.

We see the same three leaks in 8 out of 10 diagnoses.

I totally get it.

We all have the same instinct: there must be some cool AI tool that's going to change my life and make a lot of customers flood in via my website.

But now Nick's out here talking about name, address, and phone number like it's 2017.

So here's the thing: whilst dear old Google used to surface a page it liked, AI is gonna go deeper and wider.

Consistency of all those boring basic bits of business information right across the internet is one of my top 19 AI trust signals.

Highly legitimate companies in the eyes of AI are very strict and disciplined about the information that they share

You want to get yourself in good shape with AI because Google, as we know it, is clearly dying.

Don't get me wrong, by AI I do include Google, but also ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and all the others.

In this series, we'll cover a whole load of other ways we can send 'We're legit, please recommend us' signals, and if you want a sneak preview, grab the 19 trust signals from the website.

In the meantime, Google yourself and see what you find. Good luck!

'You've just got to trust them, haven't you, Nick?'

The words of Rob, a business owner I met at an event recently. He was talking about the SEO agency he'd been paying for 12 months.

I didn't need to ask anything else. I knew the pattern already:

Zero communication month to month
Zero provable results
A flurry of activity around contract renewal

I'd been introduced to Rob as 'someone who does SEO'. The cringe was real. Agencies like this are not uncommon, and I'm embarrassed to be in the same category as them.

When I got home and looked at his whole digital footprint, the red flags kept coming:

No Google Business Profile

A thin website with unfinished pages (which the agency had also built)

No meta text on any page, so Google was making up his search listings itself

The SAME keyword on every single page

No structured data at all, the behind-the-scenes text that helps Google and ChatGPT properly understand a business

So Rob, and you if you're a business owner: no, you do not have to trust them.

If you're not getting business, it's not working.
Put your URL into Google's PageSpeed Insights and see what it says. Free and simple.
Google's Rich Results Test is another good free check.
Any relationship without a proper in-depth monthly session isn't going to work. A good team wants to hear what's happening, download your expertise and ask about your competitors.

Much as this agency has embarrassed all the good SEO people out there, they've also handed me the chance to make this series. We're taking a business that already does very well on referrals and building it a stream of inbound work via the website: £1 million ($1.3m) a year.

Ask me anything along the way.
