*WE NEED YOUR HELP*
Due to the lack of support from Falkirk Councillors in the regeneration of our town centre the healthy high street group of which I am a member of, have been campaigning to get them to act on the state of our high street, with absolute NO SUCCESS - so here we are again trying to do their job for them….

We are asking the public to vote wisely and think about their historic town centre when we come to the polls again this May, as so far all we have had is false promises “over promising and under delivering” AGAIN!!!

Challenge all the parties claiming they are doing the best for the town. Quite simply, NONE of them are!

We have now seen the elected council end our Free after 3 parking, close Glebe Street toilets and still they procrastinate over our town centre regeneration .

Please take the time to click on the link and sign the Falkirk Healthy High Street petition and read the facts.

Falkirk used to be a fabulous bustling town, people used to travel to come and spend the day in falkirk town centre but this is clearly not the case now and hadn’t been for a long time so we need your help for the High Street regeneration to go ahead so PLEASE click on the petition and read the update so everyone is aware of the situation we are in before we cast our votes.

During the last few weeks many of you have chatted to me in the boutique about your fond memories of what the town used to be like, and you are now shocked when you visit at the deterioration of the High Street.

Plenty of other towns in Scotland and throughout the UK are seeing the benefits of local and central government investment and available capital grants being used to improve their town centres. Falkirk Council should be doing likewise.

Last Wednesday 8 December, opposition Councillors on Falkirk Council banded together and voted against investment in Falkirk’s town centre. A very narrow majority of 15 Councillors to 14 voted to:

BLOCK any further investment in the town centre by Falkirk Council, including any further work by officers and local businesses on the town centre action plan. The SAME Councillors had, in June 2021 voted to PROCEED with a new and sustainable combined HQ, Town Hall and other Civic Facilities at High Street/Cockburn Street.

The Council has spent £2M of the taxpayer’s money on this sort of dithering since 2017 and achieved virtually nothing.

They have now instead decided to instruct the acquisition of the old Westbank Clinic and to do updated feasibility designs for a larger HQ (to include new Council Chambers and a meeting space) on the Westbank site. The Council considered a similar scheme in 2017 but rejected it as being unsuitable but now the Councillors have elected to spend another £80k of the taxpayers money on consultants fees trying to develop a ‘sticking plaster’ solution despite knowing that the current Town Hall building is functionally obsolete!!

The stage is not deep enough for modern performances. The age of the existing 56-year-old Town Hall means that the Council will not be able to borrow money to refurbish it or attract grant funding to do so. A new combined HQ and Town Hall in the town centre would attract £8m of regeneration grant funding. The Falkirk area currently stands to lose this.

This is the reason we set up the Healthy High Street petition: to ask all Councillors to honour their earlier commitments to help to regenerate the town centre by locating the new HQ and Civic Facilities on the High Street.

One councillor in opposition said in the meeting that the views and comments of people who have signed the Healthy High Street petition are “irrelevant to him”
However, I know that many people do care about our town centre. Our petition continues to gather momentum and has already amassed almost double the number of signatures than that councillor got votes at the last election.

Another Councillor said that the town centre “doesn’t need any investment from Falkirk Council” and that “the town centre will refurbish itself – it’s been doing that for hundreds of years”.
You only need to walk along the High Street to see that this is simply not the case.

These sorts of opinions have been holding Falkirk Town Centre back for years. It needs to stop. We are talking about money that cannot be used for education, social services or other community purposes. If this capital project money and grant funding isn’t used for town centre regeneration it will be completely lost, to the detriment of future generations of Falkirk bairns.

If like us, you believe that Falkirk deserves better and agree that Falkirk Council should be locating its own HQ and Civic Facilities in the town centre.
Please take a minute to read and sign our petition. Please also share with your friends and family and ask them to do likewise.

Let’s make Falkirk great again!
