🌍🌱 Celebrating World Environment Day! Join the Movement to Combat Microplastic Pollution! 🌱🌍
Light enough to travel by wind and through the water cycle, microplastics have infiltrated every corner of our planet. From our homes to the most remote and uncharted areas of the ocean, these insidious pollutants pose a significant threat to our environment and even our own bodies.
Did you know that microplastics have been found in salt, bottled water, beer, energy drinks, seafood, and even in the flesh of fruits and vegetables?
Shockingly, studies have even revealed the presence of microplastics in our blood!
With nearly 400 million tonnes of plastics produced annually, it's clear that this problem will only continue to grow. Compounding the issue is the fact that these minuscule pieces are impossible to clean up and take decades, if not longer, to fully degrade - creating a plastic time bomb!💣
While scientists are still studying the impact of microplastics on human health, research suggests that inhalation of plastic fibres may lead to respiratory diseases, inflammation, and oxidative stress.
However, amidst this daunting reality, there is hope.
Did you know that our immune system has mechanisms in place to protect us from microplastics? Macrophages can specifically target and remove microplastics in our body!
Additionally, innovative solutions like the WasteShark are helping to clean waterways in the UK, combating plastic pollution head-on by collecting up to 500 kg of plastic per day!
On this World Environment Day, let's come together and take action to reduce the production of microplastics. We can switch to systems of reuse, adopt alternative materials, and prioritise plastic recycling. By doing so, we pave the way for a healthier planet and a brighter future 🌍💚
