While visiting my favourite beach every weekend (I know hard to believe the weather is so nice!), I noticed a lot of families heading there with their pets : usually dogs and horses.

There are a lot of arguments with dog owners and non-dog owners if dogs are alowed at the beach.

Are dogs allowed on the beach?

Before you head out onto any beach, check if dogs are welcome. You'll be able to find out online or by checking for signs when you arrive.

Now, is the beach safe for the dogs?

1. Sea swimming

Swimming is great exercise for dogs and can help them cool down on a hot day, but make sure they stay well hydrated with fresh water, so they’re not tempted to drink sea water. Most of the time it's a safe, fun activity for your dog but it's important to be aware of the dangers and what to do in an emergency.

2. Beach hazards

- Keep cool: Protect your dog from heatstroke by making sure they have a good area of shade to sit in and fresh water to drink.

- Broken glass or sharp objects. Your dog can step on them and cut the pad on their foot. Having a first-aid kit to hand is very useful.

- Sand: Swallowing sand can cause stomach problems for your dog.

- Seawater: Drinking salty water can give your dog a nasty bout of sickness and/or diarrhoea - and in some cases can make them seriously ill, as it can make them really dehydrated.

-Tides: Always check the tide times before you visit the beach, especially if you'll be in an area where you could get cut off by the tide.

3. Clifftop walkies

Pay extra attention if you're walking your dog near a cliff. It's probably a good idea to keep your dog on a close lead, especially if they're likely to chase anything.

4. Dogs and coastal wildlife

- Birds. Look out for signs asking you to keep out of certain areas. Birds that nest on the ground need a bit of extra protection and people are asked to keep away from them while they're sitting on eggs.

- Seals. This is especially important when there are seal pups around – mother seals can be very protective of their babies.

- Jellyfish. Jellyfish can give a nasty sting to people and dogs, so check the water before swimming and don't let dogs sniff around washed up jellyfish on the beach as they can still sting, even when they're dead!

- Seaweed. If your dog eats seaweed stalks they can cause a blockage in your dog's stomach or gut. This is an emergency situation and your dog might need a serious operation to remove the stalk. Dried seaweed can also cause a problem as it expands when it's eaten – at the very least your dog will have a stomach ache!

So keep your doggies safe and enjoy amazing weather!

So you are at a summer event. There is loads of food!

Did you feed your pet with leftover cakes and cupcakes?

Is it safe?

🧼 SUGAR
Dogs should not have cupcakes. While cupcakes themselves are not inherently toxic or dangerous for your dog, they are not exactly healthy for your dog, either. Besides, not all cupcakes are created equal, and some cupcakes may contain ingredients that can be harmful or toxic to dogs.

Perhaps the most obvious reason dogs should avoid eating cupcakes is the high amount of they contain. Sugar is not good for dogs, and if consumed in large quantities, it may cause diarrhea, vomiting, or digestive discomfort in your pupper.

If your dog eats a few bites of cupcake, or even gets ahold of a few cupcakes by accident when you’re not looking, it’s unlikely the sugar will pose any long-term problems for your dog. He may experience some digestive issues and experience vomiting and diarrhea.

🧼 XYLITOL
Some cupcakes may contain a sugar substitute called xylitol, which may be present in the frosting or toppings, particularly if your cupcake contains store-bought frosting. It’s important to check the labels of any ingredients or products used on the cupcake, taking care to observe whether or not xylitol has been used.

Xylitol is toxic and can be very dangerous for dogs. If your dog consumes a cupcake that contains xylitol, seek professional veterinary care immediately.

🧼 CHOCOLATE
Another potential concern when a dog eats a cupcake is the presence of chocolate. Chocolate is toxic for dogs and can pose a real danger, especially when consumed in certain quantities. Cupcakes can include chocolate in their frosting or their batter, and you should always avoid intentionally giving a dog any cupcake that includes chocolate.

If your dog ate a chocolate cupcake (or two!), contact a veterinary professional to assess the situation and monitor your dog for any adverse reactions, including vomiting, diarrhea, or behavioral changes.

🧼 NUTS
Some cupcakes may also contain nuts. This can pose a hazard to your dog, particularly if it contains walnuts or macadamia nuts. Contact your dog’s veterinarian right away if your dog eats a cupcake containing nuts and avoid intentionally feeding such a cupcake to your dog.

🧼 WRAPPERS
Another hazard from cupcakes is the wrappers. If your dog jumped onto the table or counter and helped himself to his share of cupcakes, then it’s unlikely that he took the time to remove the wrappers. Wrappers may include paper or even aluminum, both of which can pose a hazard to your dog.

Wrappers may not only pose a choking hazard to your dog, but they can also put your dog at risk of intestinal blockage, which can be life-threatening to your dog.

🧼🧼🧼Be careful and with dogs and food. Keep your dog on the leash and place food hard to reach places. 🧼🧼🧼
