Alexa Whitten Author Maker

Alexa Whitten Author Maker I help people become authors. I offer everything from writing help to design, print and publishing. Unfortunately the book was awful.

Our mission is to help all aspiring authors get their book 'out of their heads and into print' by offering a bespoke service, be it coaching or production. In 2005 - whilst at a seminar - a client of Alexa's boss (she was employed full time by him) proudly produced a book that he had written, and formatted himself. The cover was mismatched, the text inside was all different sizes and the page numb

ers weren't in the right place. Even though the author was really pleased with his publication - it sparked an idea and within two months, Alexa formed The Book Refinery - and has never looked back. Her and her team have now worked on hundreds of books, from business 'how to', to fiction and childrens' publications. They are passionate about helping people become authors and they strive to produce the best looking books possible.

Common mistakes - now fixed.

This lady came to me to get her book uploaded to KDP. Alas the book had crop marks on export - the little lines that show a printer where to cut the paper - and for KDP these need to be turned off.

Alas the original typesetter wasn’t available to make the changes - so we’ve had to start from scratch.

I was shocked to see this mistake at the very start… random para breaks - and no indents (even though the rest of the book had them).

Not to mention the weird spacing and slightly old fashioned chapter titles.

So it’s now been fixed and looks much better.

Hiring a professional when doing layout is critical as they will spot random errors and fix them (if they’re good!)

Feel free to DM me if you need help with your book project!

This is probably one of my favourite back covers…

When Lucy came to me with her book - I was so excited to help her with the project.

The illustrations are divine and I knew I needed to make her cover shine.

This is one of my favourite pics within the book and I knew it had to feature somewhere on the cover.

Don’t took pride of place 😍

Not long now before these are back from the printers!

Being able to help authors get their books printed and published is a joy.

Claire came to me last year with her debut children’s book, Bob & Julie and the musical bugs and it’s been a delight to get her book laid out and ready for print.

Claire has been open to tweaks and slight changes to the illustrations and Megan’s images capture the story perfectly.

I can’t wait to work on the next one!

When you work with the RIGHT people, things then happen!

Claire came to me last year with her series Bob & Julie’s Adventures and I was delighted to help her bring book 1 to print.

Illustrated by the wonderful Meghan Thorne, this story introduces the musical bugs - and finding their new home in the shed at then bottom of the garden.

Lots of lessons were learnt in brining this book together and I can’t wait to see what Bob & Julie get up to next…

and I have worked on a few projects together and I’m so chuffed he’s on the list.

This book is brilliant - breaking down why we get stuck in bad habits and how to overcome them.

Well done George, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for you in September when the winners are announced

When I was searching for a book to show someone I realised just how many children’s books I’ve helped create…and this isn’t all of them 👀😅

How wonderful that I’ve been able to help so many children’s writers… and there are a fair few more to come in the next few months!

If you’ve got a project waiting to be born, get in touch. I’d love to help!

I’ve been helping a hospice get a book typeset and published which talks about dying and what happens when we lose a loved one.

This week it’s and here is a sneak peek of one of the pages.

Written by and illustrated by this lovely story follows a rabbit called Will O’Burn (TM) as he meets animals in the woodland who have lost a significant relative.

Here is what this awareness week tries to achieve.
The mission of Dying Matters is to break down the stigma and taboo of talking about death and dying. But sometimes, it’s hard to know where to start.
27% of people find it hard to talk about death with family or friends, and 30% bottle their feelings up. If we don’t talk about death and dying and bereavement, it can be harder to cope when we experience it.*
Death, dying and bereavement affect us all. This Dying Matters Awareness Week we’re focusing on the importance of conversations about death and dying – with family, friends, employers, anyone in your life – helping you to get the conversation started.

For all of us who have had been affected by loss 💖
