I have just gotten to grips with Bricks Builder and Automatic CSS (ACSS) after completing a brochure website for a client, and there is already a new WordPress page builder on the horizon! 😲

Earlier this week, Kevin Geary, a professional web designer and developer with many years of first-hand experience, gave the world a live demonstration of his new work-in-progress product, EtchWP.

Etch is a Unified Visual Development Environment for WordPress that aims to streamline the web development process by integrating various functionalities into a single interface, reducing the need for multiple plugins, and minimising context switching.

🔑 Key Features:

🟢 Etch will provide a cohesive platform for creating custom post types, adding custom fields, managing media and building layouts within a single environment. ​

🟢 Built upon the core WordPress APIs, Etch ensures seamless compatibility and synchronisation with Gutenberg.

🟢 Designed with a class-first workflow (‘classes’ allow developers to set CSS rules to be reused across the entire site for consistency and scaleability), Etch caters to advanced developers and complete beginners by offering intuitive UI interactions alongside direct HTML and CSS code inputs.

🤔 Final thoughts…

Although still in Alpha with only 6 months of development completed, Etch is set to challenge the current standard of website page builders and revolutionise WordPress web design. By giving us direct access to clean, web-standard HTML and CSS code through the UI, and having the potential to integrate with AI seamlessly, Etch just might become my preferred method of building WordPress websites in the very near future.

Conveniently located at Junction 11 on the M20, Folkestone Services is a key stop for motorists, coach travellers, and truck drivers. Open 24/7, they offer clean, spacious and accessible facilities, perfect for anyone on the move.

It is my first live project using Bricks Builder combined with Automatic CSS (ACSS). Although there was a steep learning curve to using these tools, it was well worth the effort to produce a flexible, scalable, professional WordPress website that can grow with the business.

Working with the ChannelPorts team was an absolute pleasure, and I was lucky to collaborate with the brilliant Igor Emmerich, whose location photography really brought the website to life.

I just had an interesting conversation with a robot! 🤖

Following my recent post about AI being trained on copyrighted materials, I decided to chat with Gemini Live to hear their thoughts and explore ways to strike a fairer balance between tech innovation and creative rights. 🤔

AI may be coming for my job, but I’m still here for you! 💪🤖

The recent Webflow vs. AI contest was interesting! It all started when Henrik from ​Lovable.dev​ declared, ​“Webflow is officially dead”​ after launching their AI tool’s visual editor. Brett from ​DesignJoy​ (known for popularising subscription agencies) ​disagreed, and a live 45-minute challenge to build a landing page ensued. 😲

While generative AI demonstrated incredible speed, the Webflow approach, guided by human creativity, showed where AI falls short. AI is excellent for rapid prototyping and boosting productivity, but it lacks the strategic thinking, empathy, and nuance only human designers can provide.

That’s where I come in! 😜 I start by asking the right questions, understanding your audience, and crafting a website that aligns perfectly with your goals. I use AI tools to enhance efficiency, but the final product always has that essential human touch.

We’ve all been there. You search the web to book, buy, or find information. Maybe you start on your desktop and get bombarded with pop-ups, annoying ads, and so many options you don’t know where to start. 👿

Or maybe you’re on your phone, just after a quick answer, but the website you land on isn’t responsive. You have to zoom, scroll, and hunt desperately for what you want. Frustrating, isn't it? 😡

When websites focus on cramming in all the bells and whistles they can or the stakeholder’s wants rather than the user’s needs, the user experience suffers. And when that happens, potential customers leave. 😭
