Building your business on social media is a rented house. You don't own the audience, the algorithm does, and it changes the rules whenever it wants.
Here's the part nobody selling social media management or courses will tell you.
Facebook organic reach in 2026 sits at 1.6% to 5.9% of your followers. Instagram is fewer than 1 in 10. Post to 10,000 followers and Facebook shows it to 200 to 500 people.
That's before you factor in what happens the day the algorithm shifts and that number drops again, with zero warning and zero explanation.
Compare that to Google. Someone searching "web design Belfast" has typed the words with intent already formed. They're not scrolling for entertainment between videos of someone's dog. They're looking to buy, and your website shows up because it earned that position through content and structure, not because a feed decided to bless you today.
The bigger problem is durability. A post that performed brilliantly last month can bomb next month, same content, same audience, same effort, because Meta or TikTok changed how they weight engagement signals.
Your Google rankings don't reset because an engineer in California tweaked a recommendation model. Content built for search compounds. Content built for feeds decays the moment you stop feeding it.
Social has a role 100%. Brand awareness, community, retargeting warm traffic. But if it's your main channel for actually acquiring customers, you've built a business on infrastructure you don't control and can't predict.
Owned assets first. Website, SEO, email list. Social second, as amplification, not foundation.
