It's almost time!!
I like to take most of July off and disappear to the boat. The first two weeks are proper no-work time, and after that I work around the weather, which basically means if it is sunny I am nowhere near my laptop, and if it rains, that is when emails and bits of work get done.

I finish up properly on the 25th July, which means the next few weeks are all about getting organised and making sure my clients have everything they need before I go. For social media clients, that means content planned, written, approved and scheduled in advance so there is no disruption to their activity while I am away. It is the bit that allows me to switch off properly and still know that everyone is looked after.

This is why I am always banging on about planning ahead. It is not about making your business rigid or boring, it is about creating enough structure that you can actually have a life alongside it. Running a business is hard - you have to plan for it, communicate clearly and do the work in advance, but it is always worth it.

I know that when some people hear the words “workplace training” or “wellness session”, their first thought is probably something along the lines of, “Oh no, please don’t make us sit in a room while someone tells us to breathe and be grateful.”

And honestly, fair enough.

That is exactly why I design my bespoke company training sessions to feel practical, human and actually useful. I do not want people sitting there feeling talked at. I want them involved, thinking, laughing, chatting and walking away with something they can actually use.

A few months ago, I delivered a two-hour wellness and staff engagement session for the team at Delaney Graham, and this feedback from Lynn, their Office Manager, absolutely made my day:

“If I’m honest I was not looking forward to what I thought was someone coming in to preach to us. This was anything but. Heather gave us challenges, chats, puzzles, asked us all to be open and honest. It was a 2hr programme that felt like 20 mins. I was transformed after it, feeling positive, energised, enthusiastic and motivated. Heather has a fantastic way of engaging, keeping things moving and entertaining you in the process.”

This is exactly what I want these sessions to do.

Yes, they are about confidence, mindset, communication, positivity, motivation, time, visibility or whatever theme the company needs, but they are also about giving people space to stop, think and reconnect with themselves and each other in a way that does not feel forced.

Every session is bespoke, because every team is different. Some need energy. Some need clarity. Some need better communication. Some need a bit of confidence. Some just need a proper pause and a reset before everyone burns themselves out pretending they are fine.

If your team could do with a practical, engaging session that feels more like a useful conversation than a corporate tick-box exercise, give me a shout and we can chat through what would work best.

This week I spent two days at a business retreat that we organise every three or four months, and honestly, it was awesome. We had the chance to get proper work done with no disruptions, enjoy amazing scenery up at Lochgoilhead in Lochwood House and most importantly, we had a good laugh with other business owners who completely understand what it is like to have a million tabs open in your head at any given time.

This time I was joined by Suzanne Ulph, Ashley Scotland, Zoe Lang, Katie Bell and Carla Fullarton, and we had such a chilled-out time. There is something about getting out of your normal working environment that makes such a difference. You are not surrounded by the washing, the emails, the usual distractions or the hundred other things that pull your attention away. You can actually sit down, focus and get through the work you have been avoiding.

I did get into trouble for talking too much some mornings.

Wednesday afternoon we stopped at 4pm to go for a 2 hour spa session with their sauna, hot tub and cold dip that was AMAZING!!.

Yes, we got loads done, but we also had proper conversations, shared ideas, laughed a lot and had the kind of space that I think we all need more of.

We will 100% be booking again for September, because these few days always remind me how valuable it is to step away from the day-to-day and give yourself a bit of breathing space to think.

What do you do to reset your work time?

We are keeping the momentum going over summer with PSA, because apparently, some of us cannot just quietly sit in a garden chair and switch off like normal people.

Clarity Consultants, in conjunction with PSA Scotland West and our guest hosts, will be running a short series of free summer webinars to help speakers, business owners, consultants and professionals stay visible, confident and connected over the quieter months.

These sessions are practical, useful and designed to help you head into autumn with a bit more clarity and confidence, rather than arriving in September wondering where the last eight weeks went and why your notebook still has “sort this out” written at the top of a blank page.

First up, we have Sharpen Your Speaking Skills Over Summer with Susan Perry, Speaker Coach, on Wednesday 8th July at 7pm. If your speaking confidence feels a little rusty, this session will help you rebuild clarity, presence and confidence so you can speak more naturally in meetings, networking, presentations and events.

Then on Wednesday 22nd July at 7pm, we have How to Get Results from Social Media Without it Taking Over Your Life with Mark Saxby. This session will help you think differently about social media, understand your audience better and use your platforms in a way that creates stronger results without taking up more time.

Both sessions are free and open to everyone. Come along, bring a notebook and use the summer to sharpen the skills that will help you show up stronger in the second half of the year.

I have been extremely quiet on social media over the last few weeks because of a family bereavement, and while I did not really plan to post about it, I think it is worth saying that sometimes life just happens and you have to step back.

I talk so much about visibility, consistency and showing up, and I do believe all of that matters, but I also think we need to remember that we are human beings first and business owners second.

When something happens that knocks you sideways, it is OK not to be present. It is OK not to post. It is OK not to feel like you have something useful or positive to say. There are times when your energy needs to go into your family, yourself and just getting through the immediate needs. That does not mean your business disappears, and it does not mean people forget you exist. It just means that, for a little while, something else has to matter more.

Now that the shock has passed a little, it is back to cracking on, because that is also part of life and business. But I wanted to take a moment to remind anyone who needs it that you do not need to be visible every single day to be running a good business. Yes, plan your content, build your structure and stay consistent where you can, but also give yourself permission to step away when real life needs you more.

I won an award.

And before anyone asks, no, I did not have to vote for myself 47 times or pay for the privilege.

So while I am not pretending this is the Oscars of business awards, I am still taking it as a lovely wee moment to stop, smile and give myself a pat on the back.

I have been named Business Growth Consultant of the Year 2026 for Scotland in the Acquisition International Influential Businesswoman Awards.

And do you know what?

I am actually really chuffed.

Like a lot of business owners, I am very good at moving straight onto the next thing. The next client. The next event. The next idea. The next “I’ll just quickly do that” job that absolutely does not end up being quick.

So sometimes it is nice to pause and acknowledge that the work matters.

For me, business growth has never been about copying what everyone else is doing or throwing more marketing at a problem and hoping for the best.

It is about helping people get clearer on what they want, what actually fits them and what needs to happen next.

So yes, I am giving myself a wee pat on the back today. Then probably answering emails five minutes later.

I had an article published in Business Reporter Magazine this week, talking about how leaders can build long-term clarity in a VUCA world.

Or, in normal human language, how to keep making decent decisions when everything feels a bit chaotic.

The article looks at volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, and why clarity is not about having all the answers. Because let’s be honest, if you are waiting for complete certainty in business, you could be waiting a while.

For me, clarity is about knowing what matters enough to make better decisions when certainty is not available.

It is about understanding what kind of growth you actually want, knowing your own strengths and pressure points as a leader, building a reputation people can trust and creating enough structure to prioritise properly without becoming completely rigid.

Because busy is not the same as strategic.

A colour-coded calendar might make us feel organised, but if everything in it is pulling the business in different directions, that is not clarity. That is just very neat chaos.

This is something I talk about a lot in my work with business owners and leaders. Growth plans need to be structured enough to guide you, but flexible enough to respond to reality. That balance matters.

I would love to know what you think. Does clarity feel harder to hold onto in business now than it used to?

Can you believe it has been a week since The Growth Compass launched?
Honestly, what a night. It was brilliant, emotional, slightly surreal and it went by in an absolute flash.

One of the things I have found really interesting through this whole process is that every stage has brought a whole new learning curve.

Writing the book was one thing.

Then came the publishing process, which was a whole new world again.

Then came the launch. And I won’t lie, I was nervous.
Having so many people in the room, all looking at me, asking questions and expecting me to be able to answer on the spot was slightly terrifying.

Lovely. But terrifying.

Now, I feel like I am back in my relative comfort zone - Promotion.

While I will be taking a proper break over the summer, I am now in the process of putting together a Scottish tour for The Growth Compass Workshop.

The workshop is ideal for communities, networking groups, business groups, company team days and anyone who wants to help people think more clearly about growth in a way that actually fits them.

The feedback on the book has already been so lovely and I cannot wait to spread the word a bit more.

If you know me, you will know I am a big believer in getting yourself in the room. Especially when that room is full of people who want to get better, braver and more visible.

Our next PSA Scotland West meeting is on Wednesday 3rd June and I am really looking forward to this one.

We have Brian Downes coming over from Ireland to deliver a session on performance, leadership and how we show up more effectively as speakers.

We also have M.T. O’Donnell joining us to talk all things podcasts and how they can help you build visibility, strengthen your voice and create more speaking opportunities.

And honestly, I think this is such an important conversation. Because if you want to speak more, people need to hear you.
That might be on a stage.
It might be on a podcast.
It might be in a room where you finally stop waiting to feel “ready” and start putting yourself forward.

That is what I love about PSA Scotland West. It is not just about polished speakers standing at the front of the room. It is about learning, practising, growing your confidence and being around people who genuinely want to see you do well.

Come along if you can!

It is finally here!

The Growth Compass is officially available on Amazon.

And honestly?

I am excited.

Very excited.

Possibly “I have mentioned the book 47 times before breakfast” excited.

This book has been years of conversations, client work, workshops, honesty, lightbulb moments and the occasional “why did I decide to write a book?” moment all pulled into one practical guide for business owners who want to grow in a way that actually fits them.

Because growth should not feel like copying everyone else.

It should not mean burning yourself out.

It should not involve dancing on TikTok unless that is genuinely your thing. In which case, crack on.

The Growth Compass is for business owners who want more clarity, better direction and a plan they can actually use.

Inside, I walk you through how to:

→ understand yourself as the person behind the business
→ get clearer on your direction and positioning
→ review what is working and what is quietly causing chaos
→ look at your marketing, sales and customer journey properly
→ spot the gaps, opportunities and priorities
→ build a growth plan that feels realistic, focused and yours

The Kindle version is 99p for a short time only, and paperback and hardback copies are also available if you love a proper book in your hands.

And if you are feeling generous?

Buy one for a business pal who is brilliant, busy and possibly one strategy session away from world domination.

The first few days are a big deal for Amazon, so every order, download, share and review really does help.

You can grab your copy here: https://tinyurl.com/47w7jbvp

Thank you to everyone who has supported me and Clarity Consultants on this journey.

Now excuse me while I celebrate, refresh Amazon a few too many times and pretend I am being very calm and professional.
