I was around 15 years old when I first heard of the maverick, popular jazz pianist, Erroll Garner. Buried amidst a cornily-packaged (but ultimately very useful) compilation CD entitled ‘Various Romantic Jazz’ was his 1953 studio recording of Cole Porter’s ‘Easy To Love’. As soon as I heard his joyous playing I was hooked. My jazz piano revue, ‘From Ellington To Evans’, is about celebrating the unique qualities of the great popular jazz pianists of the 20th Century whilst affording contemporary audiences a taste of these styles in a live setting. And on the subject of the jazz tradition, I’m looking forward to playing at Twickenham Jazz Club this evening with the brilliant, veteran saxophonist Alan Barnes. Hope to see some of you there - meanwhile, inspired by Errol Garner himself, hope you enjoy the Euan Stevenson Trio’s take on ‘Easy To Love’. E 🎹
