National Boat Count records slight fall in boat numbers in England and Wales

Canal & River Trust’s annual National Boat Count, carried out during March 2026 across England and Wales, recorded a 2.1 per cent decrease in boat numbers across the charity’s waterways, while licence evasion remained largely unchanged. The survey also found that the number of boats without home moorings continued a long-term trend, increasing by 3.6 per cent to 8,825 vessels....

Vendée Globe teams ‘stealing’ technologies originally developed for other applications: Onboard Oliver Heer’s IMOCA

When Vendée Globe organisers announced in November 2025 that skippers competing in the 2028 edition would need to aim for energy self-sufficiency based on carbon-free energy, the goal was set – to limit the use of fossil fuels as much as possible. Under the new rules, fuel allowances will be reduced from 300 litres to just 60 litres, forcing teams to rethink how power is generated and managed onboard....

Video: US Coastguard crew member stops runaway boat with heroic leap

A US Coastguard crew member brought a runaway powerboat under control on Maryland's Severn River after its operator was thrown into the water, with footage of the feat shared widely online this week. The incident happened near Annapolis on 11 June 2026, when the boat's operator was ejected while making a high-speed turn. With no one at the helm, the vessel continued travelling in circles across the river at high speed....

Why the world’s largest sailing yacht is carrying inflatable sailboats

The growing demand for easy-to-deploy guest experiences on large yachts is creating new opportunities for specialist watersports manufacturers, with Tiwal securing a place aboard the 220m Orient Express Corinthian. The inflatable sailboat manufacturer says the yachting sector now accounts for nearly 20 per cent of its annual revenue, underlining the increasing role of guest activity equipment within the luxury hospitality market....

World’s first class-approved 100% hydrogen marine engine clears major commercial hurdle

Hydrogen propulsion has cleared another milestone on its journey from demonstration projects to commercial deployment. Lloyd’s Register has issued the first Type Approval Certificate for a 100 per cent hydrogen-fuelled, spark-ignited marine engine, providing independent validation of a technology many believe could play a significant role in shipping’s transition to net zero. The approval has been awarded to the hydrogen engine developed by BeHydro and confirms the design meets Lloyd’s Register requirements for safety, performance and reliability in marine applications....

The future of boating will be defined by software, not hardware, says Lookout’s founder

Limitations that would be unthinkable on the road are being brought into stark focus as marine technology develops. Many vessels still depend on the skipper spotting dangers with the naked eye. "We nearly killed some people in a small craft one night," says David Rose, founder of Lookout. The incident occurred at dusk, when a small vessel became almost invisible against dark water....

Titan sub: New report into 2023 implosion reveals ‘systemic safety gaps’

Canada's Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has published an investigation report into the 2023 implosion of the Titan submersible, revealing how a lack of formal information-sharing among federal organisations led to the submersible ultimately operating without oversight. The report comes a year after the US Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) issued a damning report on the implosion, revealing a combination of inadequate design, inadequate regulations and a toxic workplace contributed to the disaster....
