I can be a bit of a buzz kill when building new products. 🐝 ☠️

Everyone's saying — yes we could do this, we can do that. The energy is high. The ideas are flying. 🚀

I ask: why would we? Have you tested it? Have you sold it?

Silence. 🤫

I've been in that room. It's fun, creative, exhilarating even.

But thinking big means nothing if you won't do small first.

I recently designed and produced a magazine for a kitchen manufacture, using some of the great content and case studies the marketing team had produced for their website. It is being delivered to targeted postcodes in North London.

Somewhere in our presentation deck there was a man.

Fifty-ish. Silver hair, distinguished. The kind of jawline that suggests he plays golf at the weekend and makes good decisions on Monday morning. He was always impeccably dressed in the way that stock photo executives are impeccably dressed — which is to say, slightly too impeccably dressed, as though he had never spilled anything on himself in his professional life.

This was our customer.
