Afrimedia Supports International Widows Conference: “Don’t Leave Widows Behind” Global Call to Action.
London, 24 June 2025 – Afrimedia is proud to have provided photography coverage for the International Widows Conference held yesterday (23 June) at Marlborough House, Commonwealth Secretariat, London, marking the 15th United Nations International Widows Day.
The event, convened by The Loomba Foundation, brought together world leaders, policymakers, grassroots organisers, and civil society advocates to issue a powerful call for global action to end the discrimination faced by widows and ensure their rights are fully integrated into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The conference, under the theme “Don’t Leave Widows Behind”, featured keynote addresses from leading voices, including Mrs Cherie Blair CBE KC, President of The Loomba Foundation; Mrs Lakshmi Puri, former UN Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women; Lord Khan of Burnley, UK Minister for Faith, Communities and Resettlement; and H.E. Johnston Busingye, High Commissioner of Rwanda to the UK.
The event highlighted the findings of Not Leaving Widows Behind, a landmark study commissioned by The Loomba Foundation in 2024, which underscored the persistent marginalisation, poverty, and social exclusion that widows continue to face globally.
Afrimedia is honoured to have visually documented this important moment, which amplifies the urgent need to reframe widowhood as a human rights issue, not a cultural side note. Our involvement in this conference aligns with Afrimedia’s broader commitment to using media and storytelling to spotlight underrepresented voices and social justice movements.
At Afrimedia, we believe that media plays a pivotal role in shaping narratives, driving awareness, and supporting campaigns that advocate for equity. It is our privilege to partner with organisations like The Loomba Foundation who are actively making change on the global stage.
