We’re incredibly proud and excited to welcome you to Issue 505 of Sussex Business Times and to share the beginning of a very special new chapter for SBT.

After ten incredible years at the helm, Sam is stepping away from the magazine to dedicate his time and energy to his You Alright Mate? movement.

We’re delighted to welcome new leadership, working alongside Lee Mansfield, as we build on everything achieved over the past decade.

Sam and the team have worked together for several years, and what a journey it’s been! From networking events and fundraising initiatives to meeting some truly inspirational people across Sussex, we’ve shared so many brilliant experiences.

Our cover story this month is particularly close to our hearts, as we reflect on the journey together, the lessons learned and our excitement for what lies ahead.

While there may be some new faces behind SBT, one thing absolutely isn’t changing: our passion for celebrating, connecting and supporting the Sussex business community.

It all started with one Brighton meetup. Now it is a network reaching more than a quarter of a million people.

Pippa Moyle founded City Girl Network in 2016 after moving to Brighton and finding herself lonely in a new city. Ten years later, the network grew into 27 communities across the UK.

For Pippa, the numbers matter less than the impact. Women have found jobs, homes and business opportunities through connections made within the network.

She openly tells us about the difficulties of growing City Girl Network while protecting the sense of connection and belonging behind it.

Brighton has a new hidden spot: The Courtyard Abaft.

Tucked behind the Victory Inn in The Lanes, it is filled with Mediterranean-style plants and unique reclaimed signs.

The new space also gives businesses a new option for events in central Brighton. Management Partner Kausar Ali and the team are welcoming networking events and private celebrations, with food and drinks packages available.

The courtyard is now open, bringing something new to one of Brighton’s oldest pubs.

Worthing’s biggest ideas are taking to the TEDx stage.

TEDxWorthing returns to the Pavilion Theatre on Monday 5th October, bringing together a line-up of speakers with very different stories and perspectives.

This year’s line-up includes familiar Sussex faces alongside new voices. SBT’s own Sam Thomas will speak about men’s mental health, and Dan Thompson looks at the places and communities that matter to us.

Sarah Hadwen will talk about building meaningful careers. Julia Panozzo will discuss how AI shapes our thinking. Emily Pybus will focus on making spaces safer for young women. Charlotte Curl will offer new ideas on how we celebrate, and Toby Gorniak MBE will share how he turned challenges into opportunities.

The Big Fat Greek Club is heading into Year Four.

Created by Panina Shepherd of Acumen Law and Kyriakos Baxevanis of Nostos Hove, the Club offers a more relaxed approach to business networking. People sit down over lunch and get to know each other properly without the usual pressure to work the room.

The new year kicks off on Friday 11 September at Nostos in Hove, with a special Heart2Heart conversation featuring Lyndsey Clay of Connected Brighton and Helen Pomery of Tottington Manor.

Every technology investment should support your wider business strategies.

New software is always emerging, AI is advancing quickly, cybersecurity is evolving, hybrid working and cloud computing have changed how organisations operate. But adding technology without a clear purpose won't always make your work easier.

Jermaine Weeden from ITDS Managed Services understands what happens when systems do not work well together.

For example staff spend extra time looking for documents, entering the same details more than once, gathering information, and waiting for approvals. These small inefficiencies soon add up.

His advice? Start with the way your business works. Fix disconnected systems. Automate repetitive tasks when it makes sense. Make sure each piece of technology meets a real business need.

Sussex businesses are helping The Starr Trust change young lives.

The charity supports young people aged 10 to 25 who face obstacles in sport, art, education or mental wellbeing. Over the past year, its trustees have allocated ÂŁ46,600 in grants.

Local businesses play a big part in making this work possible.
Brighton CCTV has supported the charity for around ten years. Evergreen Waste donates a percentage of its turnover and gets involved with fundraising. Kaiser Carpet Cleaning has joined them, donating 2% of every invoice raised.

The impact is clear in the stories of Daniel and Veronika. Support from The Starr Trust has helped Daniel pursue his talent for chess and Veronika has received funding to continue dancing after moving to the UK from Ukraine due to the war.
