A little bit of a special week for us at HOPG 🧡

Our founder Wendy received her OBE from The King at Windsor Castle for services to fundraising through Payroll Giving.

For more than 30 years, Wendy has championed Payroll Giving, helping employers, charities and employees harness the power of workplace giving. Through HOPG, that work has helped generate more than £82 million for charities across the UK.

It was a proud and emotional day for our family and team to see Wendy's dedication recognised in this way.

We also met some incredible people throughout the day, including Sir Idris Elba (!), who was being honoured for his work supporting communities and young people.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the Payroll Giving journey over the years. This recognition may have Wendy's name on it, but it reflects the collective efforts of everyone who believes in the power of giving.

This week is Volunteers' Week (1st–7th June) and we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible people who give their time, energy, and skills to make a difference.

Volunteers are the backbone of so many charities and organisations. Without them, countless vital services simply wouldn't exist. Whether they're supporting frontline work, fundraising, mentoring, or simply showing up week after week - their contribution is immeasurable.

Volunteers' Week has been running since 1984, giving organisations across the UK the chance to shine a spotlight on the people who make it all possible. This year marks over 40 years of celebrating that spirit - and what a legacy it is.

So if you volunteer, have ever volunteered, or work alongside volunteers - thank you. You matter more than you know.

Today is World MS Day, and we're putting the spotlight on MS Society UK.

The MS Society UK is a UK charity that supports people affected by multiple sclerosis. They fund research and offer information and support. Plus, they campaign to improve life for everyone with MS.

MS Society says: 'We understand what life’s like with MS. And we know together we are stronger. We’re researching, writing, campaigning and fighting. Running, walking, caring and talking. Together, we are strong enough to stop MS.'

How your support can help:

• £10 a month could pay for calls with a specialist MS Nurse on their freephone Helpline, so that they can provide someone with the emotional support and information they need.
• £15 a month could help people with MS get vital support from their Benefits Advisors to help navigate the complex benefits system.
• £20 a month could pay for lab equipment like petri dishes to grow bacteria important for studying genetics. The next breakthrough is in reach.

Find out more about MS Society here: https://www.mssociety.org.uk/

And don't forget, you can donate to MS Society through Payroll Giving. See more details on our website: https://www.handsonpayrollgiving.co.uk/charities/detail/74

This article is a brilliant read for anyone working in the charity or non-profit sector!

This CharityComms article by Vicky McGuire breaks down behaviour change models (like MINDSPACE and COM-B) and shows how you can apply them to your communications without blowing your budget.

Some highlights:

• Start with clear objectives and genuine audience insight before deciding on tactics
• Consider who delivers your message - sometimes a person with lived experience is more powerful than a CEO
• Small nudges like social norms, loss aversion, and defaults can have a big impact on whether people act
• The COM-B model is a great framework for checking whether your audience has the capability, opportunity, and motivation to change

With budgets tighter than ever across the sector, working smarter with behaviour change thinking could make a real difference to the impact of your campaigns. This is a really useful read!

We all use behavioural nudges in our day-to-day lives, but how can you effectively apply them to your communications? Vicky McGuire takes you through the basics and outlines some frameworks you can apply right away.

Donor feedback!

We regularly ask people who've signed up to Payroll Giving to share their experience with us. Hearing directly from donors helps us understand what's working and where we can do even better.

When we ask "How satisfied are you with your experience of setting up your donation?", the responses we've been getting lately have been really heartwarming.

Like this one:
"Your representative was an amazing and friendly representative, she explained everything clearly and concisely. There were a huge variety of charities to donate to and she allowed me time to think on what ones I want to support. She was great!"

This is exactly the kind of experience we want every donor to have - friendly, clear and never rushed.

We're always looking for ways to improve, so if you have any suggestions or ideas, we'd genuinely love to hear from you.

This National Rescue Dog Day (20th May), we're shining a light on one of our favourite Payroll Giving options - Sponsor a Puppy with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People train puppies to become life-changing companions for deaf people across the UK. And now, their Sponsor a Puppy programme is available through Payroll Giving.

For just £10 a month - tax-free through your salary - you can follow a puppy's entire journey from fluffy beginner to fully trained hearing dog.

Here's what your £10 a month does:
→ Funds the training of a life-changing hearing dog
→ Gives a deaf person greater independence and confidence
→ Comes with regular 'pupdates' along the way!

It takes around 24 months to train a hearing dog. That's 24 months of updates, milestones, and knowing your contribution is making a real difference to someone's life.

Want to hear it in someone's own words? Anne Pickett shares how her hearing dog Tegan has completely transformed her life (try watching this without welling up).

If your employer offers Payroll Giving, you can sign up today to support people like Anne.

Ten years ago Anne Pickett from Hampshire, 67, underwent crucial surgery to remove a brain tumour. Although the surgery saved her life, she was left complete...

What does the new Charities Aid Foundation UK Giving Report tell us about the state of generosity in the UK right now?

The latest CAF UK Giving report makes for fascinating reading and this summary from 3rd Sector Mission Control pulls out some of the most important takeaways.

Yes, the number of donors has dipped in recent years. But given everything going on in the world right now, what strikes us most is how many people are still giving. Between 50–60% of UK adults are still donating to charity regularly - and in the current economic climate, we think that's genuinely remarkable. A real testament to the generosity of those who want to give and are able to.

One of the most interesting findings is that most donations are unplanned. Two-thirds of all giving happens spontaneously - through fundraising pages, social media, or collection buckets. In fact, as many as two in five donors say they only give when directly asked or moved by an appeal.

Which is a good reminder of just how much a well-timed ask can matter.
