The Púca

Here is a line drawing sketch I did as part of a potential personal project I want to work on for Halloween, which is based around the púca, a shape-shifting fairy from Irish folklore.

Halloween is of irish origin and comes from the pagan festival of Samhain. The puća is a prominent creature of Samhain that comes from the otherworld and is known to shape-shift. The pùca can be benevolent or menacing, depending on how communities react to them.

Im thinking about doing either an acrylic painting or a 3D sculpt of the pùca

Red Room from Twin Peaks

I 3d modelled, textured and rendered the red room from the legendary show Twin Peaks in tribute to David Lynch who passed away last week.

David Lynch was a great inspiration for many artists including myself and he contributed so much to art, not just film, but painting, writing, television and music. There was no one like him before but as artists, we can only continue his legacy by pushing the boundaries of what art can do.

RIP

Here's my Art v Artist for 2022

Here is a selection of art I have done over the past year and also a photo of me. This post is also a good opportunity to reflect on my creative output and my development as an artist and designer.

This has been a very positive year for my creativity but it got off to a rocky start. At the start of the year I was working tirelessly on a game project for my masters degree in game development. Sadly, I had to defer my degree and eventually dropped off because it affected my mental health badly and it was too much of a struggle to balance it with working. I also found that it really restricted my creativity as almost all my creative output was tied to the degree, as you would probably see from any of the work I posted up in 2021.

All is not lost though, as I completed four units of the course, that is equivalent to a postgraduate diploma, meaning I now have a PGDip in game development. More importantly than that, i am now able to explore my creative interests more freely and at a pace I can work to.

After rediscovering 3d graphics after many years away from it, I have decided to pursue 3d in greater depth and I am teaching myself about various stages of the 3d pipeline using.

This is why there has been a gradual transition from 2D work to 3D work on my feed. At present, a lot of it is quite simplistic but I am still working to find my style and the type of 3d work I most enjoy producing.

I am going to ensure that in 2023, I continue to practice making 3d art so that I get better. At the same time, I will ensure that I also still continue with other creative passions I have such as drawing and painting, and I will still continue to post these when I can.

This may seem obvious, I have also come to recognise the importance of being part of a community of creatives, either online or in real life and part of developing does involve working and sharing with others and as a community, we need to look out for each other.

This is my finished character design for the Curupira, a character from Brazilian folklore who protects the rainforests and wreaks havoc on those who take too much from the rainforest. You may notice his feet are backwards, but this is not a mistake, he is always depicted with backwards feet.

I made these side and front view drawings for a character sheet, which I am going to use to make a fully rigged 3D model of this character, which can then be used in a game, as part of a project at uni.

I was inspired to depict the character of Curupira as I am very keen on environmental issues and I thought this character could make a really good basis for a game which is fantasy orientated, but has a strong informative and educational component and educates that player about the destruction and deforestation of the Amazon rainforest.

I will continue to post my progress in more posts in the coming weeks.

I haven't posted in a while but I have definitely been productive. I am starting a masters in Game Development at in January, which I am excited about, but in the meantime, I have been setting myself very small game projects to get wamed up for it.

This is a game I made called SPACE CHAOS, which is a simple space shoot 'em up game. I designed and programmed this using Gamemaker (admittedly using tutorials as a guide) and I am still working on it and making changes such as adding more power ups and also tweaking the sprites to give them more detail.

I'm pretty happy with how it has turned out so far and of course I made sure it had some good music to go with it. Once I am happy with it, I'll be sure to post a link to it so you can download.

I'm trying to think of another game project I can do over the Christmas holidays.
