"What, exactly, is the power of online communities/fandoms?!"

Digital fandoms have come to the fore in recent years, rapidly growing during the most peculiar of social periods. From gaming communities to social media fan pages, online groups have been the places that brought people together from all over the world, saving the sanity of many, and establishing connections with others at a time when our traditional social mechanisms were somewhat hampered.

At their core, digital fandoms became the perfect foil through which we could meet our fundamental need for social connection and belonging. They allowed us to form new relationships with like-minded individuals who share our interests and values, regardless of geographical, cultural, or otherwise enforced social boundaries. (let's not get started on that particular topic!)

Digital fandoms provided many a sense of identity and purpose, as we identify ourselves as members of a particular group or subculture. In many cases, these online communities became a crucial part of peoples social support networks, and that hasn't waned, if anything, it has built momentum.
