Here is another painting in our current sale. Please like and share with any friends who may be interested in art. Sale closes next Sunday - over 1,000 lots spanning 500 years of art. Many lots with no reserve.

In this post I feature an attractive oil painting by the British/New Zealand artist John McIntosh Madden (1856-1923) entitled ‘Supper Time with the Fishing Fleet’. We see two people on board a boat having a meal, under shelter with light provided by what appears to be an oil lamp.

The seas, whilst not stormy, are not exactly calm either and all the boats are rocking to and fro. In some ways this work reminds me of that well-known painting ‘A Fair Wind’ by the American artist Winslow Homer.

J.M. Madden was born in England and arrived in Christchurch in 1877 at the age of 21. From 1895-1920 he was the art master at Christ’s College. In 1895 he had founded the Palette Club which encouraged plein air painting of which the current work is an example. In 1922, Madden moved to Auckland where he died the following year aged 67.

More than 200 lots in our current auction are offered at either NO RESERVE or reserves as low as 60% of the low estimate.

The vendor says ‘SELL’ so this work is available at NO RESERVE in our current online art auction.

It is a whimsical pen & ink drawing by the late Garth Tapper (1927-1990) showing an adult talking to 3 schoolboy rugby players and clearly giving ‘pointers’ as to how they should be playing. Tapper sums up the exchange brilliantly with the caption “That know all jerk talking to the kids at half time. Played (for) the Ruatoria Senior B’s sometime …”

Born in Morrinsville, Waikato, Garth Tapper studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts from 1945-1951, then under a Carnegie Scholarship at Slade and Chelsea Art Schools 1961-52. Tapper was a realist painter depicting contemporary NZ life. He served as an art teacher at Elam and from 1987 he lived in Northland.

This framed pen and ink drawing (Lot 102) is offered at NO RESERVE in our current March sale and can be viewed in the catalogue at the following link. https://auctions.heritageartnz.com/24031 where further details can be found, including estimates.

More than 100 lots in our current auction are offered at either NO RESERVE or reserves as low as 60% of the low estimate.

Over the coming days I will be showcasing some of the more interesting art that we have in our current online art sale which runs for 10 days from March 28th-April 7th. Please share these posts with any of your friends/colleagues who you think may be interested in seeing our quarterly art catalogues. The first post below shows a work by Cedric Savage.

This is a lovely little vibrant watercolour, signed and dated 1932, by the noted New Zealand artist Cedric Savage (1901-1969). Given that it is approaching 100 years old it is in remarkably good condition, matted and framed, ready for hanging.

Born in Christchurch, Savage studied at the Canterbury School of Art. He was an art teacher in Fiji from 1930-33, then in Sydney from 1935-40. Following service in WW2 he moved to Takaka (Nelson) and became a full time artist. He later spent much time in Southern Europe where his fame grew. He exhibited in a number of European galleries including the Paris Salon. Savage died on a visit to Spain in 1969.

Cedric Savage was featured multiple times in the magazine, Art in New Zealand, which was published between 1928-1946 and which we will be turning into PDF files later this year for those who are on our mailing list.

The watercolour is Lot 25 in our March sale and can be viewed in the catalogue at the following link. https://auctions.heritageartnz.com/24031 where further details can be found, including estimates.

If you join our mailing list at www.HeritageArtNZ.com you will receive PDF art books and magazines free of charge.
