The highly acclaimed Alvor Trio will present a most varied programme of music for flute, viola and harp. Each half of the concert opens with a skilful reworking of music by Mozart, the first being a potpourri of famous moments from The Magic Flute ingeniously woven together; the second an arrangement of an early string quartet. The programme also includes Vaughan Williams’ ever-popular Studies on English Folk Song and ends with Debussy’s evocative Sonata for flute, viola and harp, arguably the most celebrated work for this combination. Also included is an enchanting contemporary work by Helen Grime; a brief Interlude by the French composer Jacques Ibert; and a most moving composition by John Pickard based on a true story of extraordinary courage during the Syrian Civil War.

Composed by Michael Blake in 1986, 'Let Us Run Out Of The Rain' paraphrases Nsenga kalimba (thumb piano) music recorded in the Petauke District of Zambia (in southern Africa) by John Blacking in 1961, and transcribed by him. The tunes were composed and performed by Gideon Bingaili, Ackson Lungu, Taiad Mwanza and Ackson Zuly.
This version for percussion quartet was commissioned by Chris Brannick for Ensemble Bash in 1995 and premiered at the Purcell Room, London on 19 July 1996. It is scored for marimba (2 players) and vibraphone (2 players). Ensemble Bash has recorded 'Let Us Run Out Of The Rain' on their album 'Damba Moon' (SoundCircus SC006).

Paul Mann, Emma McGrath, and the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra's Thomas Pitfield: Orchestral Music release is a MusicWeb International Recording of the Month!

“This is an important release.… The recorded sound of this CD is close to ideal. It is excellently balanced and has real clarity and presence.… This disc goes a long way towards righting these wrongs and is superb in every respect. Emma McGrath makes a first-rate violin soloist in the Concerto Lirico and Fantasia on an Old Staffordshire Tune; she is technically impeccable and I cannot imagine her sensitive interpretations being bettered. The performances by the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra are astonishingly idiomatic – anyone listening might suppose these performances were recorded by a British orchestra. I hope that Paul Mann conducts more orchestral pieces by Thomas Pitfield, as he clearly has an innate understanding of his music. I hope this disc introduces as many people as possible to this endlessly rewarding composer.” —David Jennings, MusicWeb International https://bit.ly/4fhwKju
