"We get all our work through word of mouth."

I hear it a lot, and it's a great position to be in. But think about what happens next.

Someone gets your name from a friend. They don't ring straight away. They look you up first. They search your name, glance at your reviews, have a quick look at your website.

If what they find is out of date, thin, or not there at all, some of them quietly go elsewhere. You never hear about it, because the people who didn't call don't tell you.

Word of mouth gets you considered. What they find when they look decides whether the phone rings.

Friday question, and I'd love honest answers.

If your website went offline tomorrow morning, how long would it take you to notice?

An hour? A week? Until a customer mentioned it?

There's no wrong answer, but it's a telling one. If the honest answer is "a while", that usually means the site isn't sending you anything you'd miss. And a site you wouldn't miss isn't really working for you yet.

So, how long?

Nobody has any visibility on how visible they are. That's the bit I'd like to fix.

So I offer a complimentary visibility audit. I check four things by hand:

🔹 The foundations of your website
🔹 Where you rank on Google for the searches that matter to you
🔹 The state of your Google Business Profile
🔹 Whether AI tools like ChatGPT mention you when people ask for a recommendation

You get a written report in plain English. What's working, what's costing you enquiries, and what to fix first, with some practical tips you can action yourself.

It's yours to keep. Take it to your own web person if you like. No sales call attached.

Request yours here: growthmatix.co.uk/audit

Being found is only half of it. Being found for the right thing is the other half. âš¡

Cord Electrical are a father and daughter team in Didcot. When they came to me, people kept ringing them about plumbing. Nothing in the name or the old branding said electrician, so the wrong calls came in and the right ones didn't.

So the whole build was about being unmistakable. A logo with a cable and a three pin plug in it. A site that puts credentials, a gallery of real work, reviews and a quote form right where you'd look for them.

A person can tell what they do in two seconds. So can Google, and so can an AI assistant deciding who to recommend.

If a stranger landed on your homepage, how long would it take them to work out what you actually do?

People keep asking me how you "get on ChatGPT". There's no form to fill in and nobody to pay. 🤖

An AI assistant recommends a business when it's confident about four things:

🔹 What you do and where you do it. Said plainly on your site, not buried in a slogan.

🔹 Answers to real questions. The things customers actually ask, written out in plain words on the page.

🔹 Structure. Markup behind the scenes that tells a machine "this is an electrician, in Didcot, open these hours".

🔹 Agreement. Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your website all telling the same story.

When those line up, you're easy to recommend. When they don't, the assistant plays safe and names someone else.

The good news is none of it is a trick. It's the same clear, honest information a customer would want anyway.

A five minute job for this week that will tell you more than any report. 🔎

Most people check their website by searching their own business name. Of course you come up. That isn't how a new customer finds you.

Do it the way a stranger would:

🔹 Open a private or incognito window, so Google isn't flattering you with your own history.

🔹 Search what you do plus your town. "Kitchen fitter Ipswich", not "Smith and Sons".

🔹 Look at the map results first. That's where most local customers click. Are you in there?

🔹 Then ask ChatGPT the same thing in a full sentence and see which businesses it names.

What you see is what your next customer sees.

If you'd rather I did it properly and wrote it up for you, the complimentary audit is here: growthmatix.co.uk/audit

You wouldn't print a thousand brochures and leave them in a drawer.

Plenty of websites are exactly that. Paid for, nicely designed, and seen by almost nobody.

Something to chew on before Monday.

10/10/2026

This is how people find a local business now. They just ask.

And they get two or three names back, not a page of results.

Is yours one of them? Find out with a complimentary visibility audit: growthmatix.co.uk/audit
