Today I turn 50.🎈

Which feels slightly surreal to write.

So many memories keep flashing before me, and it’s made me think a lot about my 30 years working in marketing and all the things that have changed along the way.

At university, I wrote a dissertation on branding called ‘Is it really more than a paint job?’. 30 years later, I’m still fascinated by what makes people choose, trust, remember and buy.

Since then, there’s been agency life (where I met my husband), corporate roles, start-ups, running my own business, brilliant people, hard lessons, reinventions, and a huge amount of change.

Marketing looked very different when I started. Fax machines, CD-ROMs, and long campaign lead times all felt completely normal and hold some of the most wonderful memories.

And if I’m honest, the last year has also reminded me how important perspective and resilience are.

50 feels less about age and more about perspective. And despite everything that’s changed over the years, I still genuinely love what I do and feel lucky to be doing it.☺️

April packed plenty in.

✅ Running a webinar with Small Business Britain

✅ Delivering AI training

✅ A brilliant day at the British HR Awards in London

✅ A trip to Las Vegas

✅ Welcoming two new clients

And a few moments that reminded me how valuable it is to step outside the day-to-day occasionally.🚪

A month of contrast and variety - different places, different conversations and inspiration in all of them.💬

Now onto May, which has always been one of my favourite months.

Bank holidays, birthdays, hopefully some warmer weather… and longer, lighter days.☀️

Keeping up the annual tradition. May the 4th be with you!🪐⚡️Enjoy the bank holiday.

A little throwback to last month’s West Kent Expo.

Our founder, deep in concentration on the GFHR Consulting stand - networking, chatting, and very seriously considering the next Jenga move… all in a packed room.💡

Hadn’t been to Las Vegas for nearly 20 years… and I saw it through completely different eyes this time.👀

What struck me most wasn’t the casinos or the hotels.

It was how much everything is designed to grab your attention.‼️

The robot taxis.
The huge digital billboards.
The animation everywhere.
Even familiar brands had a Vegas sparkle.✨

Then right next to all of that were loud, bold roadside law firm ads fighting just as hard to be noticed.

Love it or not, it’s a reminder that environment influences how we think, feel and spend (especially spend!).

It also made me realise how quickly things are changing.

So much of the tech we talk about as “the future” is already here, built into everyday life.

I’ve no idea what it’ll look like in another 20 years 🔮

One of the most useful parts of a webinar I delivered this week with and the Lloyds Bank Academy, from my perspective, wasn’t the slides, it was the questions at the end.🙋

A few came up that I hear all the time:
“I’ve got an idea… but I don’t know where to start”
“I’ve got a product… but it’s aimed at everyone, how do I narrow it down?”
“How often should I actually review my business plan?”

They sound simple, but they’re where a lot of businesses get stuck. The instinct is often to jump straight into doing - social media, your website.

But the real starting point is usually something much more fundamental: Research.

Not overcomplicated… just taking the time to properly understand:
- who your customers really are
- what they actually need and value
- how they make decisions
- what good looks like in your market
- how others are positioning and packaging their offer

Because once that’s clear, everything else becomes much easier. The same applies to business planning. I always say review it at least once a year, but more importantly:
- write it down
- keep it visible
- come back to it regularly
- refine it as things change

Your business plan shouldn’t sit in a drawer. It should be something you actually use to make decisions. And once you’ve done it properly once, it becomes much easier each year (promise!).👍

Clarity doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from stepping back and thinking properly before moving forward.

Thank you again to Small Business Britain for having me along and to everyone who attended after the Easter weekend.👏

If you’re feeling a bit stuck in your business right now… this might help.

It still feels a bit early to be thinking about work after the Easter weekend…

but this can be a really good moment to pause and reset.⏸️

Next Tuesday (7 April, 10–11am), I’m running a free webinar with and Lloyds Bank Academy on creating a simple, practical business plan.

Not the kind that sits in a drawer…
The kind you actually use to make decisions.

We’ll look at:

✅ what to focus on (and what to ignore)

✅ how to set priorities that actually move things forward

✅ how to turn ideas into a simple, realistic plan

✅ and how to make sure it doesn’t get forgotten

You’ll also get a worksheet to help you get started.

It’s designed to be really practical, especially if you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed or unsure what to focus on next.

If you’d like to join, you can sign up via the link in my bio.🔗

I’d love to see some of you there and have a great Easter weekend. 🐣

Sometimes marketing isn’t about doing more.

It’s about stepping back and getting clear.👀

Over the past year, I’ve been working with a long-established business to refine their positioning and build a strategy for their next phase of growth.📈

But the same challenge comes up with sole traders and small businesses too:

👉 What do you want to be known for?
👉 Who are you really trying to reach?
👉 And what should you focus on next?

Clarity makes everything else easier, your messaging, your marketing, your decisions.💡

If your business feels a bit reactive at the moment, it might not be about doing more…

It might be about getting clearer.

Some of the most useful market research doesn’t come from reports.

It comes from conversations.

Last week I spent time at the West Kent Expo, an event that brought together hundreds of business owners and local organisations from across the region. Rather than exhibiting this year, it was a valuable opportunity simply to step back, listen and talk with people running businesses day to day.👂

Events like this provide something you rarely get from formal research: a real-time sense of how businesses are feeling and what they are experiencing on the ground. The picture right now is mixed. Some businesses are thriving and finding growth easier than ever. Others are facing a more complex environment, with rising costs, shifting demand and plenty of wider economic uncertainty. But what stood out most was the positivity and resilience in the room.🧡

The day began with the networking breakfast hosted by Sevenoaks District Chamber of Commerce followed by opening remarks from leaders of the three local councils: Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge & Malling and Sevenoaks.

What made the event particularly interesting was the diversity of businesses present. Established companies, growing SMEs and people right at the beginning of their careers were all part of the same conversations. There was also some impressive creativity across the exhibitor stands. For small businesses especially, creating something interactive, engaging and still aligned with their brand (and budget) is no small task. The games, puzzles and imaginative ideas on display were brilliant.👏

Huge credit to for organising such a well-run event. Bringing together over 500 attendees and keeping everything running smoothly is no small achievement.

Events like this are a powerful reminder that local business communities still matter.👍

They create space for honest conversations, shared insight and new connections that are difficult to replicate elsewhere.

If we crossed paths at the Expo, it was great to meet you. If not, hopefully we’ll see you at the next one.

Two young women.
Two very different career paths.
The same mindset that will take them far.

International Women’s Day may have been yesterday, but I still wanted to recognise two young women at the very beginning of their careers.

For the past few years, Freya and Lille-Belle have worked with Sharp Thinking alongside their studies, supporting some of the research and marketing work that happens behind the scenes while building their own futures.

Their paths couldn’t be more different.

is studying Law , drawn to the subject because she enjoys forming arguments and exploring complex issues while keeping her future options open. 📚

is training in Professional Musical Theatre and Dance , one of the world’s leading performing arts schools, with ambitions to perform professionally in the West End.🩰

Despite heading into very different industries, their outlook is remarkably similar.

Both talk about the importance of pushing themselves outside their comfort zones, managing their time well and making the most of opportunities in front of them.⏰

Alongside their studies, they’ve also supported Sharp Thinking with research and some of our own marketing projects, gaining experience while helping me explore new thinking and perspectives.💡

What I’ve learned over the years working with students is that experience matters far less than attitude.

Curiosity.
A willingness to learn.
The ability to listen and take direction.
And the work ethic to balance study with real responsibilities.

Freya and Lille-Belle have shown those qualities consistently.

I’m incredibly proud to have worked with both of them over the past few years and excited to see where their journeys take them next.

Thank you both for your commitment and the support you’ve given over the past few years.👏
