Bees make queen cells in the middle of the comb mainly when they need to replace their queen unexpectedly (called an emergency replacement) or when they are quietly replacing a weak or aging queen (supersedure). In these cases, worker bees select a very young larva that is already in a regular worker cell—often located in the center of the comb—then enlarge that cell into a larger, peanut-shaped queen cell and feed the larva royal jelly so she develops into a queen. Because they are modifying an existing cell rather than building one from scratch along the edge, the queen cell ends up in the middle of the comb.
