If you still pay your PAYE by cheque through the post, this month's deadline is Saturday.

HMRC wants cheque payments to have reached them by the 19th of the month. This month the 19th is a Saturday, so in practice the envelope needs to be gone a couple of days earlier than you might be used to.

If you pay electronically you have got until the 22nd, same as always.

I have not dressed this up. Both dates are on GOV.UK, under Pay employers' PAYE, and that is the whole post.

Preston's Heritage Open Days opened yesterday. Thirty three events across the city, free to get into, running to the 20th.

The Flag Market Makers Market is on today too, so the city centre has two separate reasons for people to be walking round this weekend, not the usual one.

That's the kind of week a national agency plans around a spreadsheet and misses completely. If you trade anywhere near Preston city centre, this is a busier few days than most, not a quieter one.

HMRC's Making Tax Digital sign-up service goes down for maintenance at 5pm today. It's back up at 1pm on Tuesday.

If signing up is on your list this month, this weekend isn't the time to try it.

This isn't a Mensia thing. It's HMRC's own maintenance window, and if you're not sure whether MTD applies to you yet, your accountant will know before I would.

Blackpool switches the lights on at nine tonight. They stay on until the third of November.

If you trade anywhere on this coast, your year did not finish last weekend. There are another two months of people coming, and the Gazette put the town's visitor economy at £2.15bn.

That is the bit a national agency does not know. They will plan your autumn as if the season ended in August, because everywhere else in the country it did.

Two months is a long time to have a website that is still talking about summer.

Send me your website and I will tell you the first thing I would fix. No charge and no pitch.

Three things I look at before anything else.

Does the contact form actually arrive. Half the ones I test do not, and nobody finds out until they wonder why the phone has gone quiet.

How long the front page takes on a phone on 4G, rather than on your laptop on the office wifi.

Whether a stranger can tell what you do and where you are inside five seconds.

They felt bad for messaging on a Sunday. We'd already shipped it. 😅

Elvins asked a simple question this morning: "is there any way of removing employees?" A few of their team are heading off to uni soon.

Bank holiday Monday is a week away. If your hours are wrong on Google, that is the day customers find out.

Next Monday, 31 August, is the summer bank holiday. If you have not set special hours, Google shows "hours might differ" next to your listing, or worse, shows your normal Monday hours and sends someone to a locked door.

Fixing it takes about two minutes:

1. Search your own business name on Google, signed in to the account that manages the listing.
2. Tap Edit profile, then Hours, then Add special hours.
3. Pick Monday 31 August and set what you are actually doing. Closed counts too.

A customer who turns up to a shut door does not come back to find out why.

If you cannot find where to change it, ask below and I will point at it.
