In the early days, I said yes to almost everything. New opportunities, projects outside our expertise, last minute requests. Like many business owners, I thought that's what growth looked like.

What I've learned is that good leadership isn't about saying yes to everyone.

It's about making decisions that allow your team to do their best work and your clients to get the service they deserve.

If we take on work that isn't the right fit, stretch ourselves too thin, or promise more than we can realistically deliver, nobody wins.

Having boundaries doesn't mean you care less. In many cases, it means you care more.

It means being honest about what you can deliver, protecting the quality of your work, and respecting the time and wellbeing of the people around you.

I still find it uncomfortable at times, but I've learned that a respectful no today is far better than a disappointing yes tomorrow.

Despite all the noise around AI, Google's focus hasn't changed as much as people think.

Google wants to see genuine expertise.

It wants to know that your website is written by people who understand their subject, not by someone churning out generic content that could apply to any business in any town.

Google is also looking for topical relevance. The websites performing best are those that demonstrate deep knowledge in their industry, not those trying to rank for everything.

And above all, Google wants quality.

Content that answers questions.
Content that solves problems.
Content that provides real value.

Not pages stuffed with keywords.
Not content written purely for search engines.
Not dozens of AI generated articles with no original insight.

AI isn't the problem.

Poor content is.

The businesses winning in search are using AI to support their content strategy while adding their own expertise, experience and knowledge.

That's why I keep saying AI SEO is good SEO.

If your website demonstrates expertise, authority, relevance and value, you're already moving in the direction Google wants.

The question is, does your content genuinely help your customers, or is it just taking up space on your website?

One thing I've learned over the years is that honesty is worth far more than a sale.

Today I had five calls with potential clients.

Only two were genuinely ready for marketing support right now.

The other three? They weren't at the stage where spending money on marketing would give them the results they wanted. Instead of trying to squeeze a sale out of the conversation, I gave them some honest advice about what they needed to focus on first.

The response was interesting.

Every one of them was genuinely appreciative that I didn't try to sell them something they didn't need.

Would I have liked five new clients today? Of course.

But I'd much rather build a reputation for being honest than hit a short term sales target.

Not every enquiry is the right fit. Not every business is ready. And that's okay.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is point someone in the right direction, even when it doesn't benefit you immediately.

In my experience, people remember honesty. They remember who helped them when there was nothing to gain.

And more often than not, those conversations come back around when the time is right.

Business is built on trust, not pressure.

Not every marketing strategy is right for every business.

What works brilliantly for one company can be a complete waste of time and money for another.

The mistake I see all too often is business owners following trends, copying competitors, or investing in marketing channels because someone told them they "should" be doing it.

The reality is much simpler.

Your marketing should be built around your business goals, your target audience, your budget, and where you are right now in your business journey.

Want more local enquiries? Your strategy will look different from a business trying to sell nationally.

Need leads quickly? Your approach will be different from a business focused on long term brand growth.

There is no one size fits all solution.

The key is choosing the marketing activities that give you the best chance of achieving your specific goals, rather than trying to do everything at once.

Choose wisely, stay focused, and invest in what actually moves your business forward.

AI can write content in seconds.

That does not mean people will trust it.

One of the biggest problems with SEO right now is that so much content feels cold, generic and completely forgettable. You read it and instantly forget who wrote it.

That is why real experience matters more than ever.

AI can rewrite information already online, but it cannot genuinely talk about:

The stress of losing rankings
The excitement when a strategy finally works
The lessons learned from failed campaigns
The emotions behind running a real business
People connect with people.

It is also one of the reasons I invest heavily in video content. When you watch my videos, you see me, hear my opinions and feel my passion for what I do.
