Case Study: Helen Cullen-Williams

You’ll probably know me as a Business Start Up Trainer or “The Branding Lady”!
My journey with The Growing Club started right back on day one, when Jane and Rachel gathered a room full of expectant female founders together with this radical idea - women actually supporting each other to grow their businesses! 😲

I instantly knew I wanted to be part of it. But it also made me realise the business I was running at the time wasn’t something I wanted to grow in its current format. So The Growing Club became the spark that sent me back to the drawing board (literally) and off to design school to add creative skills to my marketing experience.

Fast forward a few years - after completing the fabulous Bloom & Grow course during the chaos of Covid - I was invited to deliver branding and marketing workshops, which led to me becoming a regular Business Start Up trainer and mentor.

Life outside work has been exceptionally tough for me in recent years, but The Growing Club has genuinely kept me going. Being in a room with other female founders - encouraging them, cheering them on and being inspired by them in return - reminds me why I keep riding this crazy self-employed rollercoaster.

And I don't want my journey with you, our amazing North West female business community, to be over yet… Christine (my BSU training partner) and I would love to keep supporting you, but we need you to help us decide the next step... Find out more 😊🙏: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/MJpkGA5A6L

What is your Christmas wish for your business this year?

We'd love to start a conversation on the things you are striving for (and perhaps also struggling with). We know it can sometimes feel a bit lonely running your own business, so let's see what things we have in common.

Our wish is to have a smooth move to our new premises, so that we're ready to keep delivering sessions and supporting the women in our community.

We are looking for mentors to help support our next cohort of women who will be graduating from our Business Start Up course early in 2026.

If you are a woman running your own business and would like to support another woman in her ongoing business journey, please email [email protected]

Training is provided and there are regular sessions to help support mentors.

Chance popped this little message into my hands this week.

The insightful invited each person at her graduation from 's Business Start Up course to choose a slip (without seeing the contents) and this was mine. It couldn't have been more appropriate for me right now.

So I'm popping it on here in case it helps anyone else in this moment.

has created a wonderful supportive space for women in business in NW England. If you're just starting out on your business journey the next Business Start Up group begins in June so head on over to their profile and get in touch now.

Or if the time isn't quite right for you now, wait until autumn and you'll have me as one of your trainers 😊

✨ Today is World Autism Day, so it’s the perfect day to share a project I was absolutely thrilled to work on. ✨

I had the pleasure of designing the brand identity for **Sparkle Clean Lancaster**, a domestic cleaning service that’s not just about spotless homes— it’s about empowering autistic individuals through meaningful employment.

Trudie, the woman behind Sparkle Clean, has exceptional attention to detail, making her an outstanding cleaner as well as someone with a great vision and a desire to make a difference.

If you're in Lancaster and want a sparkling home while supporting a fantastic cause, get in touch via the details on the flyer.

And please share and spread the word to help Trudie with her vision!

Let’s celebrate the positives of neurodiversity and help a small business make a real impact. 🌈

(NB - The flyer isn’t my work but I tweaked it to make the style more cohesive with the new logo. You can't quite see it all in the Meta crop proportions either 😅)

A client laughed at me recently...

I told her 'white space is a beautiful thing'. I'd been trying to persuade her to keep things simple in her draft design choices and she'd finally seen for herself why something worked and something else didn't and it was all because of white space.

It doesn't have to be white, but use space in your graphics. Don't pile lots of things onto a page. Leave space on your social media feeds too.

If you want people to absorb visual info then it needs space to 'breathe'. (Yes, I know that sounds totally poncey - do people still use that word?)

The space helps draw the eye towards what's important. If you pile too much info onto a page - or a screen - whether that's images or words, the eye doesn't know where to look. Be kind to your viewers and give them some space!

Keep It Simple Stupid (I promise I’m saying this with love 😁)

Branding can feel like a mountain—trying to get every little thing JUST RIGHT. It’s easy to get stuck thinking it needs to be more than it actually does.

But simple branding? That’s where the magic is. It makes your brand memorable and relatable:

🔹 Clarity: A clear message cuts through all the noise.
🔹 Recognition: Simple logos and slogans? They stick in people’s minds.
🔹 Consistency: Easier to keep everything looking and feeling the same.
🔹 Engagement: Simplicity invites people in. It’s more accessible, more human.

Your brand’s true power lies in how well it connects with your audience.

Let simplicity connect. 🌟💡

5 Steps to Build Your Brand through Marketing:

1️⃣ Define Your Brand: Establish your mission, vision, and values.

2️⃣ Identify Your Audience: Who would love to experience everything you have to offer?

3️⃣ Create Your Brand: Get all your visual stuff and tone of voice on point so it shows off your brand personality.

4️⃣ Identify the Gaps and Opportunities: Review your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to guide you in where to focus your efforts.

5️⃣ Plan: Put it all together into a three month plan. Review after three months. Start again!

Imagine this: Your brand, the talk of the town, recognized and adored by everyone. How did it get there? ✨🚀

A well-planned marketing strategy is the backbone of a strong brand identity. That’s why I teach marketing planning, as well as brand and branding, when I deliver workshops for new business owners.

Here’s the benefits of planning your marketing so your brand can shine:

🔹 Consistency: A solid plan ensures your messaging is consistent across all platforms, making your brand easily recognisable.

🔹 Targeting: Understanding your audience allows you to tailor your marketing efforts, ensuring your message hits the mark every time.

🔹 Efficiency: A clear plan keeps you on track so you stop dithering around.

🔹 Adaptability: Planning means you’ve got a strong foundation, so it’s easier to adapt to market trends without losing your unique identity.

Plan to shine! 🌟💡
