This one came from the heart ๐Ÿซถ

My first brand design project - and full transparency, it was for my own business: Little Grouse, a children's countrywear brand I founded back in 2018.

When the time came to expand into retail stockists, the brand needed an evolutionary refresh that felt credible in a new market without losing what made it feel like us.

The brief: retain the warmth and personality of the original brand, while bringing it up to a standard fit for wholesale buyers and retail shelves. Built on passion for rural life and British manufacturing, and designed to fill a real gap in the market for quality kids' country clothing.

Looking back, there's plenty I'd do differently (the kerning, for a start!) but I'm proud of what this brand stood for. The brandmark was just the beginning. I'll share more of the brand's development and collateral in future posts!!

Not every project starts with a blank canvas!

James Donaldson Timber were expanding their composite range into cladding and fencing, and needed two new brandmarks to sit alongside their existing Perform Decking identity.

The font and iconic join detail that had already earned brand equity were the foundation to build from, so my job was to expand the family while keeping everything feeling cohesive, and making sure each mark could still hold its own.

'perform' remains teal throughout the suite for further consistency, with a different accent colour used for each product to set them apart. This allows room for further growth should additional products be included further down the line.

From creative brief to fully booked in a year! ๐Ÿ‘

This time last year, Chelsea Sinclair - International FEI groom and founder of Sinclair Equine Services - approached me needing a brand identity that could hold its own in a notoriously crowded market and reflect the trust and expertise she'd already built in the region.

My process, as always, started on paper. After working through a number of handdrawn concepts, a clear direction started to take shape: a classic serif font to convey tradition and reliability, paired with a simple but distinctive 'S' icon.

Then came the detail that made it truly hers. Using a reference photo of Chelsea's own ROR show champion, Sport, I handdrew his distinctive profile and incorporated it into an 'S' mark - turning something deeply personal into the heart of the brand.

From my initial sketches to palette choices and on to the final logo, every decision was made with her positioning in mind: premium, trusted, and unmistakably Chelsea.

Almost a year on since her launch, she's fully booked and leading in Fife!

January looked a little different this year, and both my clients and I are reaping the benefits ๐Ÿซถ

For the first time, I didn't set New Years resolutions, calculate business growth targets, or map out my year!

Instead, I've had a quiet start to 2026, still moving forward but focused entirely on supporting my clients (perhaps unsurprisingly, they need me most now!)

It's been incredible on the creativity front with a sizable product launch collateral project completed, a retail sample box signed-off and sent to print, and a long-term client's brand stationery set refreshed, all while supporting and managing my retainer brands.

I've also spent more time outside, had at least one adventure (big or small) every week, and I've not felt the 'January blues' and crushing anxieties I have so often before!

My time for growth will be in March, once the daylight hours start stretching out we see a little more of that sunshine โ˜€๏ธ

Today I had the absolute pleasure of joining for Fresh Tracks - outdoor business networking with a wellness twist!

First up, I met the loveliest bunch of ladies in the stunning Lindores Barley House before a hike around the cross country fields (can not wait to return once Roly's under saddle!) chatting all things work, wellbeing, and naturally, horses!

We then had a scrumptious brunch and a fantastic session with Eilidh Robertson (so good to finally meet you IRL!) Move your feet, upside down, side swipe, no 0.5 - got it ๐Ÿ™Œ

And to finish, the lovely Alex of Jack Blooms gifted each of us these gorrrrrrgeous peonies!!

Such a lovely end to an otherwise pretty rough week of sickness, travel, and deadlines. Thank you Alice, Eilidh, Anna, Alex, and everyone I met this morning, for a really fun, warm and welcoming experience! ๐Ÿซถ

I only work with brands that are making this world a better place... but why?

Well, anyone that knows me knows that I live for adventures (big and small), believe in constant self development, want to leave the world better than I found it, and love helping others succeed.

And to create work I'm truly proud of, I need to collaborate with businesses that share these values!

What are you doing to add some joy into today?

Yesterday, we stole away to the beach for 30mins after school pick up and we were lucky enough to spot a pod of seals basking on the rocks. What an absolute joy to see those blubbery little sea pups!

Today, it looks like baking a cinnamon swirl with oodles of icing as a cheeky treat once Iโ€™ve wrapped up a new product label design!

It doesn't need to be anything huge. Just find something that lights you up inside every day, and make it a non-negotiable. ๐—๐—ผ๐˜† ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ปโ€™๐˜ ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ป, ๐—ถ๐˜โ€™๐˜€ ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ.

Itโ€™s often those joyful little moments that refill my creative tank. When I make time to breathe, play, and reset, I show up to my design work with fresh energy and sharper ideas.

So dance in the kitchen.

Take a brisk walk.

Or stick your nose in a good book for 10 minutes.

Rebranding felt like a risk.

What if people didnโ€™t get it?
What if I lost clients in the shift?
What if it was a bitโ€ฆ too much?

๐˜œ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ! Hindsight is a marvellous thing - just a shame that it rocks up around three weeks too late.

Iโ€™ve since discovered thatโ€ฆ

๐—” ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜„ ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜. Jolly Spiffing isnโ€™t just a shiny new outfit. Itโ€™s made me bolder, sassier, and clearer about what I do โ€“ and who I want to do it for.

Not everyone will join you on your journey forwards, and thatโ€™s just fine. Once you commit to it, decision making becomes so much easier. Iโ€™ve grown rather fond of a well-placed ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ, ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฌ ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ!

๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ. Iโ€™ve had more conversations, compliments, and โ€œI totally get what you do nowโ€ moments in the last few weeks than I ever did with VFPR. That says something.

๐——๐—ผ๐—ปโ€™๐˜ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—น โ€˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜†โ€™. This rebrand wasnโ€™t perfect when I launched it. But it was right. And thatโ€™s what matters.

Want 5 tips to get the most value out of your next collateral design project?

Every business works a little differently.

Some have one person signing off creative, others have layers of approvals to wade through, and I get it.

Iโ€™ve been on both sides, from solo ecommerce founder to wrangling big brands in corporate.

We canโ€™t always change how things work, but we can make sure you and I are working smarter together...

1) Make your collateral fit for (multi)purpose. For example, your trade show flyer might only need a small tweak to become a valuable sales tool too. Always ask, can this asset do more than one job? Most of the time, the answer is yes. One design, multiple uses, smarter spend!

2) Get crystal clear on your brief. Whatโ€™s the goal? Whoโ€™s it for? Whatโ€™s the message? Whereโ€™s it going? Print, digital, or both? Jot it all down. If you need a template, ping me a message!

3) Prepare and share your toolkit BEFORE we get started. Logos, guidelines, approved copy, imagery. Share everything youโ€™ve got before we get started. The more you give me upfront, the smoother the project will flow.

4) Be open and timely with your feedback. If somethingโ€™s not quite right, say so. If itโ€™s bang on, say that too! Clear, honest feedback - the good, the bad, and the โ€œhmm, not sureโ€ - keeps the project moving and gets us to the finish line faster.

5) Treat your designer like a strategic partner. Any designer worth their salt is your brand custodian too, helping to protect and strengthen how your brand shows up. Put the effort in to build the relationship, share the bigger picture, and trust our expertise.
