One of our sparky clients is getting 15–20 extra calls a week from Google Ads.

That's five posts from one job. One a week is plenty to start.

AI images look slick, but people can tell. And they don't call the bloke whose page looks fake.
Post the real stuff: the first fix, the half-done job, the mess before it's tidy. That's what builds trust.

Someone's recommended you. Nice one. First thing they'll do is Google your name.

What comes up is your Google Business Profile. If it's three photos from years ago and no recent reviews, that's not a great first look.

Put up real job photos. Get fresh reviews and reply to them. Say what you do and where you work. Chuck a new photo on every couple of weeks.

Most homeowners check you out online before they ring, even when a mate's recommended you.

A recent job photo, a review from this month and an up-to-date Google profile do more for that referral than any ad.

Stop photographing finished jobs with the bins still in shot.

Your photos are doing the selling before you ever speak to the client. On bigger jobs, they're often the first thing you're judged on.

Five quick fixes:
1. Clear the site first: tools, offcuts, packaging, ladders.
2. Turn every light on, and shoot in daylight where you can.
3. Hold the phone level and step back to show the whole space.
4. Get one close-up of the detail you're proudest of.
5. Shoot both landscape and portrait, so you've got shots for your website and Instagram.

Two minutes at the end of a job can give you content for months.

Word of mouth is still the best lead you'll get. But it doesn't finish the job on its own.

Someone recommends you. The first thing that client does is look you up: Google, your website, your Instagram.

If they find a website nobody's touched in years, a handful of reviews and a last post from 2023, that recommendation loses a lot of its weight. Especially on bigger jobs, where they're about to trust you with serious money.

Having worked on the tools in the UK and Australia, the best firms I saw were brilliant at the work. The ones winning the top jobs also looked the part before anyone met them.

Your online presence doesn't replace your reputation. It backs it up.

If you run Google Ads, Google may have changed your campaigns this month.

Throughout September, Google has been automatically moving some Search campaigns onto AI Max, its new AI-driven setup. There's no opt-out.

What that means for a trade business: Google now has more say over which searches your ads show for and what your ads say.

That can find extra work. It can also spend your budget on people who were never going to hire you.

This week, open your search terms report and check what you're actually paying for. If you see rubbish, add it as a negative keyword.
