Hatley Print Ltd

Hatley Print Ltd Hatley Print produce digitally printed fabrics on a bespoke basis for Film, TV, Theatre, Opera, Fashion, Interiors and Advertising.

Our story started in 2004, under the railway arches at the top of Bermondsey Street a stones throw away from London Bridge Station. In our cavernous studio, all of our work was carefully screen printed by hand on two 30m print tables. We worked really hard, learned our trade and were fortunate to prepare projects for some of the most prestigious creative institutions in London. From hand printed f

abrics & wallpapers for the screen & stage, to unique designs created for the catwalk, we loved every minute of our time working with London’s talented creatives. Our roots are in London, but as we watched our industry being revolutionised by new technology, we started to apply our creative care and attention to digital printing. We’re a family run business and saw that new technology could allow us to move our business away from the hustle of London to Lewes. Our beautiful surroundings, full of historical charm continue to inspire our work every day. You are always welcome to plan a visit to our studio, or we can work with you from afar.

No one can forget the scene in the film Bohemian Rhapsody where Queen brought the house down at the Live Aid concert. The production team asked us to replicate fabric for the shirt worn by bass guitarist John Deacon with its distinctive cartoon print. Their in-house graphics team supplied the artwork and we printed a sample panel of variations, concentrating on achieving an accurate tone of pink ground colour.

We only printed 7m of the final fabric but sometimes the smallest quantities have the biggest impact.

Even after being in the business for 25 years, we still pinch ourselves when we see our work on the big screen. For award-winning film Phantom Thread we supplied the wallpaper in this memorable breakfast scene featuring Daniel Day-Lewis.

We reproduced multiple rolls of a vintage wallpaper for the set designers after they sourced a single roll but needed enough for a whole room.

In situations like this, digital reproduction is a perfect solution because of the freedom, versatility and control it gives our clients. We can produce special print effects, artwork vintage textures and create a broken down aesthetic.

Phantom Thread was critically acclaimed, winning - among many accolades - an Oscar for Best Costume Design and a Best Actor nomination for Daniel Day-Lewis.

To celebrate the launch of this year’s Glyndebourne Festival, we are featuring our work for creative duo Barbe and Doucet on the festival’s acclaimed production of The Magic Flute. We printed an extensive range of fabrics across the entire production from maids’ crinolines, to tartans, to stripes, sashes and even reduced scale prints for puppets.

In fact there were very few scenes which didn’t contain some Hatley Print.

Sussex is our home and we’ve always enjoyed a really close relationship with our neighbours at Glyndebourne.

We loved collaborating with renowned Stage Director and Choreographer Renaud Doucet and Set and Costume Designer André Barbe who valued our ability to produce such a huge variety of prints and textiles to their exacting standards, helping them realise their vision for the production.

The Guardian’s Erica Jeal described the production as a ‘visual feast of eccentricity’ - we’re really proud to have contributed to such a highly successful show.

Wednesday Addams Netflix
When Netflix wanted to create the distinctive Nevermore Academy uniform for their teen horror comedy Wednesday Addams, their costume designers got in touch.

The design team had sourced a woven striped fabric they wanted to replicate, but even the 150 metres they needed wasn’t really a big enough quantity to recreate as a woven cloth.

We printed double sided to avoid any glaring white underside using a heavy cotton sateen which has a lovely smooth surface - perfect to showcase the purple and black stripes.

By creating a digital reproduction, the costume team benefited from a continuous meterage printed on 50m rolls. The stripes ran the length of the fabric without any breaks.

Wednesday Addams was a huge success for Netflix and we loved being part of such a popular series.

The BFG
We’re often asked to produce replica fabrics for the film industry when they need to create special effects or doubles of an original.

For the big screen adaption of The BFG in 2016, the costume design team wanted a direct replica of Sophie’s hero eiderdown quilt that they’d already created from their chosen fabrics.

A hero is a main prop or authentic item - in this case a hand-made eiderdown quilt. The production needed several doubles for long shots and action scenes but the original hero quilt had taken 120 hours to make.

This is where we came in.

We scanned the quilt and made samples but there were too many seams on the patchwork and it didn’t reproduce well. We went back to the drawing board and scanned each piece of fabric separately, digitally artworking them together to match the pattern on the original eiderdown. These could then be top-stitched to create the quilted effect.

We printed a LOT of samples of the quilt until we - and of course our clients - were happy that the colours matched the original as closely as possible.

We also made miniature versions (to around 20% scale) used when Mark Rylance’s BFG picked up the quilt.

The Crown Netflix
As production comes to an end on the final episodes of The Crown, we were delighted to receive a thank you note from their team.

We have been involved in every season of this historic series, working with their team of set designers to produce wall coverings, tapestries, soft furnishings, flags and even some tea towels.

In this particular set of photographs, we’ve focused on the memorable scenes on the Royal Yacht Britannia. Although no filming took place on board, we worked with Art Director James Wakefield and his team to ensure the designs were as accurate as possible, with an astonishing attention to detail.

We replicated the beautiful silk panels above the Queen’s bed which was commissioned for Her Majesty.

We have loved being involved in such an iconic production which has become a central part of modern culture.

Sometimes it’s about simplicity. And stripes. When we worked on the ENO’s production of HMS Pinafore, we tested a few different samples to get the right base cloth for the designs.

The costume designers chose a cotton gabardine for the sailors’ tops and we printed over 100m.

That’s a lot of stripes.

Frequently, costume designers ask us to recolour prints to suit the aesthetic of a character. We rework the print digitally - in this particular case a change in background colour. We produced this fabric for an Australian TV mini series called New Gold Mountain.

The designer, Cappi Ireland, wanted us to recolour the ecru background so we created a sample panel of various yellows and ochres which she then used to choose the perfect colour for the dress fabric.
