We're back after the Easter break (or Eostre if you prefer) which wasn't much of a holiday so much as a week spent curled up with snotty tissues and lemsip - a rotten cold!

Of course my eldest had to go one better and test positive for Covid but he's all clear now and we're all just a bit worn out.

But, it's still the Easter holidays if you're young and so for the next week I have 2 helpers, well more like 1, the teenager has shut himself in his room for some serious gaming. So now the cats have competition for who can get in the way of my screen in the form of a 9yo hug addict. Minecraft is my only respite - her playing, not me!

Despite the illness and the distractions though I've come back with a renewed energy. This morning has seen invoices and quotes go out, accounts updated and 2 tickets cleared off my Jira board and a sale prepped for next week for an eCommerce client. Happy clients and a satisfied me.

Time for a brew and to plan out my afternoon.

The first week back and that energy is in full flow!

I've cut out distractions and tried to follow motivational tips learnt from like the 80/20 and beating procrastination.

Working alongside , bouncing ideas off each other and teaming up on all the challenges throughout the day really helps and keeps us both focussed on getting the important stuff done.

As the temperature starts to creep up again I have a small update for you all. I'm cutting my working hours.

As some of you may know, I have a few medical problems*, more than a few. While I try not to let this affect my work temperature is something I really struggle with.

I do have measures in place to cool down my office, lots of water, fans, ice packs and cooling mats, but even with all of this when the temperature climbs I can't work. When the office temperature hits 22C there's a noticeable effect on my concentration and at 25C I'm a mess.

With forecasts in the coming weeks of mid-30s (and that's forecast, not the actual temperature in my office which tends to go higher and stay that way well into the evening) I'm going to have to prioritise my health over work. For the past couple of years I've been close to hospitalisation from the heat and I can't take that risk.

As such, if the temperature in the office goes over 25C I'm stopping work until it cools down. This may mean that I'm working during the night to keep projects going forward and I'm happy to do that, but during the day I'll be hiding from the sun, drinking lots of water and probably sitting in a cold shower.

The good news is that plans are afoot to install air-con. This is a slow process though and probably won't be in place before the summer is over.

I can't apologise enough for this but there is no doubt it will have an impact on deadlines and availability. If you're concerned about this please get in touch and we can work around the problem.

* For those interested this is largely due to Polycythemia - a condition best summed up by "thick blood". I have poor circulation which affects my blood sugar similar to diabetes but also means that I struggle to moderate my body temperature. When I get cold, it's very difficult to get warm and when I get hot it's near impossible to lose the heat. It's made worse by my ME/CFS.

The last few days have been spent repairing and upgrading laptops for clients.

If you have a computer (desktop or laptop) that isn't as fast as it used to be or just needs a bit more umph let me know. From re-installing the operating system to upgrading the hard drive or RAM.

I also offer a maintenance service - you might not know this but over time your computer collects dust (no need to be ashamed!). This dust blocks air vents and causes fans to go off-balance and wear out, usually making them noisier. The average PC should be cleaned out annually to keep it running quickly, quietly and for longer.

Spent over 2 hours validating a font file using various online tools and even trying to decode it by hand because firefox was telling me it was corrupted - even though it was working yesterday and hadn't been edited since.

Long story short, failing to put an exclusion for WOFF files in the htaccess file breaks fonts - because they they are treated as HTML files.

I either need coffee or a slap, or both!

Also, why can't I add a gif to a page post? I swear the smarter they make these things the dumber they get!

Proud to announce that I've taken over the hosting and IT support for Otherworld Miniatures.

Their previous host (who shall not be named!) were unhelpful in resolving conflicts with the site and the initial developer was no longer on the scene. I migrated the site, completed all of the necessary fixes and updates along with beefing up the site security.

As I understand this is only a short-term measure as the owner is interested in moving away from WooCommerce in favour of St******nt (my own eCommerce solution).

It's always a great day when a client is happy with the level of service I provide!

Spent a very frustrating 2 days dealing with PayPal's Sandbox environment and some of the useless error messages it throws which are no help whatsoever in diagnosing the issue.

So after 2 days of tearing a site utterly apart to test every single line of code and every step of the API interaction I've learned that the test email accounts that sandbox creates aren't automatically confirmed. That would usually be a very easy process of sending out an email with a link, clicking that link and done... but these test email addresses don't actually exist!

For anyone else that runs into the solution is to log into PayPal Sandbox as the seller account, request an approval email and then go to the Main Sandbox site and check the notifications on the seller account, which will contain the confirmation email so you can authenticate the fake email address on the fake account as being a real email address on a real account... sigh.

At least now I know...

Been struck down with a mild case of the post-viral lurgy. This means that while I was still able to function somewhat while being ill, now that I'm better I'm exhausted.

Thank you to all my clients who have been patient with me this week. Rest assured all emails will be answered over the weekend and the majority of the requests I've been able to sneak a peek at will be handled.
