This brings me right back to English literature classes in high school. I used to LOVE the experience of reading a poem or a novel or any piece of writing in an analytical way.

In fact, the more 'line by line' the better; that always added to the joy of reading for me, rather than robbing it of its magic. I loved learning what a writer had done, deliberately, to give their words the power to craft worlds in the minds of other people.

Tumblr user taiey:

The curtains were blue because everything in the room was carefully colour coordinated, reinforcing the character’s stylish and controlled characterisation. The curtains were blue because everything in the room was a different colour, reinforcing the character’s eclectic and globe-trotting personality. The curtains were blue because the character is elsewhere established to hate the colour blue, subtextually implying that their deceased spouse was responsible for that decoration choice.

The curtains were blue because throughout their filmography the director consistently uses cool tones to mark moments of distance between characters. The curtains were blue to tie the events in that room into the broader oceanic motif of this particular novel. The curtains were blue because the assonance evoked a contrast with the following stanza of the poem.

Even the curtains looked expensive: floor to ceiling velvet drapes, in a flawless royal blue. She tucked the saucer up on the windowsill and tied back faded blue curtains with a loop of string. The narrow blinds were the same navy blue as the pinstripe suit of the man who served eviction notice that sent them to this office.

The curtains were blue because the author’s childhood home had blue curtains, which they discussed in their letters related to their feelings of comfort in that place. The curtains were blue because the author’s childhood home had blue curtains, which they discussed in their letters related to their feelings of grief in that place.

The curtains were blue as an allusion to the contemporary joke about literary criticism, an extension of the author’s autocritical approach that will be further discussed in section seven.

The curtains were red, as a pun on;

The curtains were read.

2022 has been quite a year for me so far...

January: NVTV broadcast their interview with author Jonathan Fisher, in which I joined him to talk about working together over lockdown on Where The Stars Be Still As Bright by Jonathan Fisher (his latest book, which I edited - go buy a copy!)

May: Achieved my Level 3 CIM Foundation Certificate in Digital Marketing (earning a Distinction!) 🎓

June: Married Andy Arbuckle! 👰‍♀🤵‍♂
Also June: 30 wedding guests (including my new husband and I) tested positive for covid 🤒

July: Husband promoted to manager of Fifteen Lisburn 😀

September: I'm offered a full-time permanent marketing role at a fabulous non-profit 😲

After a *lot* of soul searching, I decided to accept the offer, meaning that, after 7 incredible years, today I hang up my Quill to join the amazing team at Action Trauma on Monday.

I love my clients and although the past seven years have been the most challenging of my life, they have been so rewarding too, with some incredible businesses and organisations trusting me with their content and communications.

I have loved using my unique mix of journalism skills and marketing experience to create communications strategies and content plans, and deliver website copy, social media posts and profiles, press releases, blogs and articles, and emails and newsletters. I've also had the honour of using my skills and experience to deliver workshops and webinars for local business organisations.

It's hard to walk away from what I've built, but hopefully that speaks to my excitement about this opportunity I've been offered. I feel sad to be winding things up with my clients, but equally excited to be bringing everything I've learned over the past seven years to Action Trauma. I'm already bubbling with ideas and looking forward to this new chapter.

So, what's next for the Quill Inc NI social channels? As well as being my business identity since 2015, the brand is deeply personal, so it will continue to exist and I plan to continue sharing things like news, job opportunities and events within the local creative and voluntary sectors.

I also plan to return to my long-idle blog The Patchwork Quill whose focus is culture, crafting and creativity in NI, so a merger of my two 'Quills' at some stage is possible...

Watch this space! Thanks for being part of the journey with me so far.

Did you know that the chronological Facebook feed still exists? In other words, you can see posts as they happen, and not just what Facebook thinks you want to / should see? The boogeyman AKA The A l g o r i t h m 😱

It's not a hidden feature, but it's not the default setting. This video below shows how to access your 'Recent' feed. (Tap into the video to see it properly)

In the app, click the 3 lines, or the 'hamburger' on the top right. You'll see a button which says 'Recent, Favourites'. Click that and you'll be brought into your feed in chronological order. You can switch between it, your 'Feed' (ie led by the algorithm) or your Favorites, which are pages and people you've told Facebook to prioritise.

Try your Recent view and see if it freshens things up a bit; you may see content from people and Pages you haven't seen in a while.

Feed is handy if you haven't been on for a few days and want a quick catch up on things you might have missed, but I find it gets very stale and starts churning out the same content repetitively.

The next time you open the app, it will have defaulted back, but it's a few quick clicks to get back to your chronological feed.

I've seen a lot of businesses on Facebook recently complaining that nobody is seeing their posts. If you've got a page, try prompting your followers to check their Recent feed when they log on and hopefully they'll see a bit more of your content. Remind them to interact with the posts they see (both in Recent and in Feed), to show Facebook they want to keep seeing your stuff.

I've just spotted this while on the Libraries NI website - overdue fines have been scrapped, effective October of last year. This is amazing! 🙌🏻

The Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey said: "“Fines, particularly where they accumulate over time, are more likely to impact vulnerable people, including those on lower incomes. This positive move paves the way for customers who have been anxious about overdue fines to return to libraries and avail of the many services they provide."

Jim O’Hagan, Libraries NI Chief Executive said removing fines had yielded "positive results" across the UK and Ireland as well as internationally. He continued: “Our focus is on offering a free service to all members of the community without barriers to participation and it is encouraging to see the usage of libraries increase each week as we reintroduce face to face programming."

Fines for overdue library books are to be removed with immediate effect, Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey has announced.
