Writing has become functional and often transactional. It’s a means to an end. Something to skim, send, tick off, or delete. But writing wasn’t always like this.

This might blow your mind, but… writing isn’t always about the words. It’s about the attention you give to yourself while you write them.

My client asked me to do something unconventional last week.

Usually when you hire a content writer, they'd write the content for you. But after completing a first draft, my client changed their mind and decided they wanted to do it themselves.

It wasn't that I'd done something wrong. In fact, they complimented the quality of the work I'd produced. They just felt disconnected because they hadn't actually produced it for themselves.

For them, the act of doing it was just as important as getting it done. But they lacked the knowledge on how to hone their thoughts into a clear, and action-oriented piece of writing.

So they made a request:

For the next piece of work, would I be willing to get on a call and act as a writing body-double/consultant, while THEY write.

It's not a request I've ever had before, but we gave it a go. And it worked!

With my knowledge of the craft of writing, combined with my client's original ideas and deep knowledge of their business, we created something great together.

It ticked all the boxes: the tone was right, the message was clear, and, most importantly, they felt proud of it. That sense of ownership made all the difference to them.

UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT 🚨 I think we need more negative spaces.

But no, I’m not talking about the kind of spaces that fuel hate and ignorance (there’s far too many of those already).

I’m talking about the negative spaces between words.

Before you jump to the conclusion that your copy isn’t working, ask yourself this:

Is it the message that’s off? Or is it the way it’s being presented?

Does it have clear headings?
Any breathing room?
Or does it hit you with a wall of words at first glance?

Copywriting isn’t just about what you say. It’s about how you present it on the page.

Negative spaces - white space - helps people absorb your message without having to work hard.

It makes content feel easier, clearer, more trustworthy. And it gives your strongest lines the ability to actually land.

So if your content isn’t converting, don’t automatically assume the words are the problem. They might just need some more room to breathe.
