Why do QR codes sometimes fail to scan?

It’s not always the QR code itself.

When a QR code is printed, things like size, print quality, contrast, surrounding space and the material it’s printed on can all affect how easily it scans.

Glossy or reflective surfaces can make scanning harder too, especially in bright light.

The good news? Most of these problems are easy to avoid.

Always test your QR code from different distances and angles before sending it to print — especially for menus, posters, stickers or signage.

This is Orlov Printing — a revolutionary printing technique invented by Russian engineer Ivan Orlov in 1890 that changed the world of security printing.

Unlike ordinary colour printing, where colours are layered separately, Orlov Printing transfers multiple inks through a special process that creates sharp, seamless colour transitions in a single print run.

At first glance, this passport page looks like a normal printed design. But change the lighting conditions, and a hidden image suddenly reveals itself.

This is Metameric Ink Pair technology—a security printing method where different inks are carefully chosen to look identical under normal light, but separate when viewed through a special optical filter.

In this reel, we explore a Qatar travel document issued in 2016. The back endpaper uses metameric inks applied through offset printing. Under visible light, the colours blend together… but through a red optical filter, a dark bird profile appears.

A perfect example of how modern printing hides security features in plain sight.

What looks like a single colour under normal light can reveal a completely different picture when viewed through a special filter.

This is called Metameric Ink Pair technology—a security printing technique where two inks are designed to appear identical in visible light, but react differently under specific conditions, revealing hidden colour differences.

Used in high-security documents like passports, this technology helps verify authenticity and makes counterfeiting much more difficult.

In this reel, we explore a 2013 Japanese passport and reveal how the same printed area transforms when viewed through a red optical filter.

This isn’t just ink—it’s one of the world’s most advanced security features.

At first glance, it looks like a normal printed design. But tilt the document, and a beam of light appears to move across the image while the colour shifts before your eyes.

This technology is called SPARK® (Optically Variable Magnetic Ink). During printing, magnetic pigments are precisely aligned using a magnetic field, creating a striking “rolling bar” effect that’s incredibly difficult to copy.
