Quick heads-up for anyone running a local business round here πŸ‘‡

Ask ChatGPT or Google's AI for "best [plumber/electrician/tree surgeon] near me" and you don't get a list any more β€” you get three or four names. That's the shortlist. Most people never scroll past it.

Google has confirmed those answers are built from pages it can actually crawl and read. So the things that decide whether you're named are unglamorous:

β€’ Hours, services and service area in plain text on your site (not stuck inside an image or a slow widget)
β€’ The exact same details on your Google Business Profile and any directories
β€’ Reviews that are recent, not from 2022
β€’ A contact form that actually sends

If your info is out of date or inconsistent, AI just quotes whatever it finds elsewhere β€” often a competitor's page describing you in their words.

Try it now: ask an AI for a business like yours in your town and see who it names. If it's not you, that's fixable.

I build and fix websites for small businesses (this is my day job), so happy to answer questions in the comments β€” no charge, no pitch. πŸ™‚

The Q&A section on your Google Business Profile has quietly disappeared. Here's what replaced it.

If you've tried to add a question or answer to your listing recently and couldn't, you're not going mad. Google switched off the Q&A API in November 2025 and has been phasing the feature out ever since.

Any old Q&A still showing on your profile is frozen β€” you can't edit it, and it'll vanish eventually. New profiles don't get the feature at all.

In its place: "Ask about this place", an AI feature powered by Gemini. Customers type a question in plain English and get an instant answer.

The catch? You don't write that answer. The AI does β€” using:
β€’ Your Google Business Profile (description, hours, services, attributes)
β€’ Your customer reviews
β€’ Your website content
β€’ Photos you've uploaded
β€’ Other listings and directories with your details on them

So if your opening hours are wrong, or your services aren't listed properly, that's what customers get told.

What's worth doing this week:
βœ… Go through every section of your profile and check it's accurate and complete
βœ… Tick the right attributes β€” parking, wheelchair access, payment methods
βœ… Ask customers for specific reviews. "Great service" tells the AI nothing
βœ… Put an FAQ page on your website with schema markup so Google can read it properly
βœ… Make sure your details match everywhere you're listed online

You've lost direct control, but you've also stopped having to police strangers answering questions about your own business. Swings and roundabouts.

If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your profile, drop me a message.

Your customers aren't scrolling through ten blue links any more. πŸ” They ask a question, they get an answer, and about three businesses get named.

The good news: getting to be one of those three isn't magic. ✨

πŸ“ Keep your Google listing current.
⭐ Get reviews and actually reply to them.
πŸ’¬ Answer real questions on your website in plain English β€” prices, areas covered, how long you take.
πŸ“Έ And show proof you exist: photos of real jobs, real people, not stock images of someone shaking hands in an office.

Do a few of those properly and you'll be ahead of most of your competition. Genuinely. βœ…

I design websites for small businesses and help them get found. If yours isn't pulling its weight, send me a message β€” happy to have a look and give you an honest opinion, no hard sell. πŸ‘‹

β˜• 6am, coffee on, and one by one every client website got its updates checked, tested and signed off. Nobody noticed a thing β€” which is rather the point. 😌

I’ve just added this Light Grey Shaker Kitchen Renovation project to the newly redesigned Michael Grady's website.

This is a great example of a full kitchen transformation project, and it was important that the new website properly showcases the quality of their work with a clean layout, clear project pages, and before/after style content that helps potential customers see what’s possible.

You can view the project here:

If you're a local business and your website doesn’t properly show the quality of your work, that’s usually the difference between someone just browsing and someone actually getting in touch.

Light grey shaker kitchen renovation with shaker cabinets, modern layout, new worktops and full installation. View this MG Kitchen Designs project.
