Honoured to be back working with .studio on this second geometric install for British-Iranian artist Soheila Sokhanvari’s REBEL REBEL exhibition at the in Denmark!

Although smaller in square footage to the Barbican install (this time last year), the geometric patterns were still painstakingly hand-painted, transforming this gallery space (walls and floors!) to act as the perfect backdrop for Soheila’s artwork.

A true labour of love that went incredibly smoothly only for the .studio gang and the team. It was an absolute dream to be working on this project again and that too in Denmark - probably the best freelance gig to date!

Soheila’s wonderful exhibition kicks off this week, so if you’re in Aarhus over the next few months do stop by to check it out. And in the meantime, here’s our BTS antics of the install! (INCYMI, I’ve posted a reel in my previous post)

PORT TALBOT

One from the archives - A collaborative design proposal with to create an iconic placemaker mural in Port Talbot, using bold typography and colourways that encapsulate the intense change in coastal landscape. Subtle references to the movement of the ocean within the form of the typelock were also incorporated to bring further energy whilst still maintaining a distinct and contemporary piece of art.

We explored various design concepts before settling on the final piece. Sadly the plug was pulled at the very last minute so I wanted to share this here as it really was one of my faves from this year.

Here’s hoping 2023 will be a promising one for murals! 🤞🏾

“USE US OR LOSE US”

This isn’t just a pretty sign I painted but a slogan that speaks so much truth. I had created it for ’s campaign last year and a year on it still bears so much.

With the way things are going, we indie business and artists need your support more than ever. Black Friday deals are being more and more appealing (I’ve been guilty of it too) which makes our struggle to compete with those deals undeniably real.

We really can’t compete. Rents, bills, business rates, wages, families, all still need to be met, and many of us are juggling more than one job for sources of income to make ends meet. So, this is why we may not be able to always drop our rates or offer lucrative discounts at times like this. It may seem like you’re getting value for money on insanely discounted prices/fees for mass produced products and corporate services but please trust me when I say that you will NEVER loose value from us with all the unique skill sets we offer. Supporting us isn’t just about helping us helping us pay bills but stopping us from forcing ourselves to compromise our worth to compete with the bigger outfits. Know that you will ALWAYS get so much more in return….during good times and bad. That NEVER changes!

So please can I ask that, if and where possible, you continue to spend that extra bit of moolah on those handmade goods, those fun workshops, those bespoke commissions and creative services. You won’t regret it and we will always be grateful for it.

A glimpse into my lettering workshop a few weeks back. A three hour intense crash course session where you learn how to construct your very own letterform, explore colourways and paint. I always love the outcomes from these workshop - often inspiring me on ways to approach my own work.

I cannot wait for the next one that will be held at my old studios on the 4th of December (two weeks tomorrow!) This will be my last one for 2022 so if you’d like to join in on some lettering antics I believe I have a couple of slots left. My workshops are intimate in size to get the most of my 1-1 attention.

In this 3-hour IN-A-NUTSHELL session I’ll be showing you how to design your very own letter/number from scratch, which you will then get to paint onto a 40x40CM board to take home with you!!

A few things from the archives I never got the chance to share. Let’s start with this one…

Back in December 2020, I had pitched my ideas for the Barking Heritage Mural competition, courtesy of and , to only go get shortlisted as one of the finalist!

Sadly, I didn’t bag this gig (it was won by muralist Jake Attewell aka ) but its one that I’m super proud of regardless, hence sharing it with you here.

So this is what it would’ve looked like👆🏽 In response to the brief, the intention of the proposed design was to encapsulate the iconic architectural buildings and lost heritage of Barking through the use of delicately thought out illustration and lettering. It was imperative that the design connected to both the old and younger generations to evoke
a sense of pride and belonging. Not to mention, bring a sense of home to the many migrants of the diverse and ever evolving district. With this in mind, the style is an amalgamation of both the modern and the traditional. This is particularly noted in the lettering styles and composition - a gentle nod to the forgotten past, drawing from old shop front signages and advertising. This, along with the abstract illustrative motifs that commemorate the lost buildings of Barking, keeps it fresh and engaging within the present times. A modern mark of the bygone era, so to speak.

I’m not going to lie - I was gutted but it’s all part and parcel of life. You win some and you loose some. Let’s hope I’m lucky the next time!

Hiiiiiiii! 👋🏾

Yep, it’s been a while!

2022 didn’t kick off well at all hence the much longer and unplanned hiatus from the gram. Adulthood got tested from all angles over the last the 6months with relentless s**t thrown our way….BUT hey, we’ve navigated out of it and here we are, equipped with more resilience! 💪🏾

Running your own practice is one helluva juggling act with all the hats you wear - the designer, the maker, the artist, the office manager, the accountant, the PR team, the assistant, the compliance officer, etc - soooooo I’m not going to lie, it’s going to take me a while to revive my mojo/momentum on here (especially with all the other roles I have going outside this) but im slowly working on it.

For those of you who’ve DM’d me on here - I promise I’ll get back to y’all soon!

Anyhooo, I hope you haven’t missed me and my antics much. It’s good to be back….(I think?) Haha. I’ll be back with more content to share but for now here’s the mural I did of the piece I designed for ’ colouring book back in May last year……with all my clones….which I felt just sums up this post perfectly. 🤪

Our Open Studios & Winter Market will be kicking off in just under two weeks!!!

This is a collaborative event that brings together a selection of talented craftspeople from ’s wider craft community alongside the Forge’s creative residents who will be opening up their private studios to the public. It gives you a one time chance to meet all the designer-makers, learn about their practice, gain a creative appreciation and even buy directly from makers. There will be over 40 designer-makers to explore!

We’ve also got a drop-in, affordable, family-friendly workshop on both days. On Saturday will be holding a “Block Print a Furoshiki Wrap” workshop and on Sunday I will be leading a letter painting workshop (I will share more on that later)

There’s also a pop-up café run by a micro-bakery serving authentic Japanese savouries and sweets. I mean what more could we offer to make this lovely festive weekend for you! So if you’re in the area or fancy a little day out, please come out way and say hi! It would mean the world to us ☺️

This will be my first experience of an “open studios” (where I’m not the on visiting!) so do come swing by and say hello. My doors will be open on just the Saturday and then I’ll be running the workshop on The Sunday afternoon. For more info keep an eye on the page and website!
