Basta Now / Women, Trans & Non-Binary in Experimental Music, 2024

Design and layout for a non-academic essay by French poet, novelist and music enthusiast F***y Chiarello.

'Basta Now' is an introduction to the vast womxn's experimental scene that was never written about, unravelling in the list of 2371 names of female, trans and non-binary artists around the world. The form is playful and is laid out in a careful design with illustrations, photos and lists, including discographies.

'Basta Now' is the first book publication on Permanent Draft, an all-female record label and micro-press founded by musician Valentina Magaletti and writer F***y Chiarello that aims to give exposure to contemporary female, non-binary and transgender artists.

'Memory Thirteen', 2024

The second LP of Ellis Swan and James Schimpl's duo (US/Canada) Dead Badit is going to be released on 9th Feb (you can preorder this 150 limited vinyl+booklet edition) on Italian label Quindi Records. I can't wait!

It was an immense pleasure to work on the artwork for this album that takes the listener to the memories of the David Lynch movies whose visual language I used as an inspiration for Dead Bandit's 'killer's ballads' cover (as much as 'Droga Za Widnokres,' Marek Grechuta, 1972). The record is presented with 24page booklet with photographs taken by Ellis and James during the tour that gave start to the 'Memory Thirteen' album.

Additional collages featured on the cover are by Leo Calder.

Almost arrived at destination with the fourth and final single from Memory Thirteen, the forthcoming album by Chicago based duo Dead Bandit. The latter don’t set out to write feel-good drive-time anthems, but the sense of pushing to the extremes of energy and introspection shows that Swan and Schimpl are testing the emotional limits of their weathered sound. Indeed, the cautiously sentimental atmosphere of “Blowing Kisses” hints at the hard-won light that can be encountered while purposefully driving in the dark.

As for many 2023 was a difficult year, but as we all seem to also notice is how many great things came out last year, too. A third single 'Peel Me An Orange', with my favourite picture, from the new LP by Dead Bandit (Memory Thirteen, Quindi Records 2024, whose cover I was having a pleasure designing) is out today!

The instrumental collaboration between James and Ellis has an open lyrical quality that says as much as any spoken line, and on this album they’ve particularly embraced the power of contrast as we’re led between scenes, sometimes within the confines of a track.

“Peel Me An Orange” - the third single from Dead Bandit’s new album ‘Memory Thirteen’ - is particularly instructive in this regard, starting out as a paean to sonic degradation and the acute sense of desperation it projects, only to give in to a lilting loop of vibrant guitar before widening out fully into an emphatic explosion capable of reaching the extremes of energy and introspection.
