🇬🇧 Next season you will join the Paris Opera Academy as a pianist and vocal coach. What does this new chapter represent for you?

“It is an extraordinary opportunity and an important milestone in my career to be able to train within such a prestigious opera house, working there while continuing to learn alongside exceptional artists.

It will also be a completely different way of working: living to the rhythm of an opera house, attending rehearsals and performances, and witnessing the entire creative process from the first rehearsal through to the final performance.
There will, of course, be a great deal of opera repertoire, but I am equally delighted to continue exploring Lied and French mélodie through the Academy’s recital programme.”

🇫🇷 Tu as fondé le festival berlied à Berlin : qu’est-ce qui t’a donné envie de créer ton propre espace artistique ?

“J’ai fondé ce festival il y a 6 ans, pendant la pandémie de Covid. En l’absence de spectacle vivant et de salles de concerts pleines à craquer, je rêvais d’une plateforme qui nous permette d’expérimenter les formes de concerts, l’interdisciplinarité, et de faire entendre des répertoires moins connus, de sensibiliser à des thématiques politiques (réchauffement climatique, féminisme, questions Q***r) et à faire entendre plus de musique composée par des femmes, et/ou sur des poèmes de femmes.

Nous sommes maintenant une équipe de trois femmes, qui nous occupons entièrement du projet. Cette année, nous jouerons l’intégrale des œuvres pour une voix et piano de la compositrice berlinoise Ursula Mamlok, et inviterons notre public à redécouvrir l’œuvre d’Oscar Posa.”

Pianist Justine Eckhaut reflects on her journey in the world of Lied and on the unique role of the piano within the singer-pianist duo. She discusses the importance of text, mutual listening and musical transmission, shaped in part by her work as a Lied teacher in Stuttgart, as well as her commitment to creating new artistic spaces through the berlied festival, which she founded in Berlin.
