So what do we mean by ‘bad’ strategy? Well, ‘lazy’ might be a more appropriate word. Or ‘ill-considered’. Or ‘rushed’. Or ‘generic’. There are many words we could use. But the particular choice of words in a good brand strategy is vital. Vital to a successful outcome. Vital in ensuring that the strategy in question feels specific to the DNA of the organisation it’s going to represent. And that the organisation can recognise itself in the words used to describe it.

7 April 1969 is often cited as the Internet’s symbolic birth date with the publication of the first ‘request for comments’ (RFCs), documents for engineers to share new ideas in a public forum, which were adopted as new standards by the Internet Engineering Task Force. We’re continuing to update our website, sharing more of our ideas, case studies and results. Please take a look – we hope you enjoy: www.rosedesign.co.uk

In case you happen to be visiting Rye (and even if you’re not, but you’re looking for an amazing photo-shoot/film/event location) see if you can wangle yourself a tour of the Old Monastery on Conduit Hill. Its owner – the delightful Alex Macarthur – was incredibly welcoming when we rang the bell, out of the blue, and so generous with his time in showing us around. He has completely renovated the 14th century monastery and had countless anecdotes and stories about the history of the place to tell. Most of the flamboyantly curated furniture, art and ephemera are for sale too. Thank you Alex!

14 years ago today, the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings opened its doors to the world. We created the multi-award winning brand identity, taking our inspiration from the beachside location to complement the beautiful architectural space created by Hat Projects. It has since renamed as Hastings Contemporary (brand evolution also by Rose) and remains a cultural jewel on the South Coast of England.

In celebration of World Book Day yesterday, we wanted to share one of our favourite (and rarest) design books in the studio: Posters by Jaqueline S. Casey – Thirty years of design at MIT.

A timeless source of inspiration on our book shelves. If you ever find a copy - buy it!

In celebration of World Wildlife Day, we wanted to share our wonderful collaboration with Royal Mail, who commissioned us to design 10 stamps and a special minisheet to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the WWF, back in 2011. The stamps were designed for everyone to look into the eyes and faces of 10 endangered species – and hopefully encourage support for this amazing charity.

With the 79th BAFTA Film Awards taking place this evening, at London’s Royal Festival Hall, we wanted to share some behind-the-scenes insights into how we arrived at our iconic rebrand for them. In our discovery phase, we worked closely with photographer John Bellars, who captured the coveted award from every conceivable angle, to identify the most iconic vantage point. Once we had landed on the right angle and lighting state photographically, we then worked with long time collaborator and icon specialist Chris Mitchell, to create the refined, elegant, illustrative version of the final marque.
