I have been a fan of Mike Leigh for many years, especially his early work for the BBC with 'Play for Today', my favourite being his hilarious film 'Nuts in May'. I always adored the timely and wonderful script, brought to life by the fantastic lead performances by Roger Sloman and Alison Steadman.
When I was approached to cast the upcoming Room 18 film 'Toast', I immediately loved the script and backed the talented team. I knew they would create something emotionally gripping, and timely. Discussing who would be perfect for the co-lead role, it was magical to see us all agree on Roger. Harry (writer, and co-lead), and Benedict (director, and producer), admired his work on the long-running show 'Eastenders', and my love for 'Nuts in May', proved the casting to be a dream come true for all parties.
Approaching and working with Roger and his lovely agent team, was an absolute delight. Not only was he a consummate professional, but he understood the script deeply, and was extremely passionate, something you can only dream about from an actor.
It's always great to cast actors you're unaware of, getting the taste of discovery and branching out into the unknown. But likewise, getting to cast actors you're aware of and admire, is an absolute pleasure.
I cannot wait for you to watch the film. Benedict, Harry, and the rest of the Room 18 team did fantastic work, and the performances from Roger, as well as Harry, are fantastic.
