The discussion around the Scottish Greens advertising on Grindr during the election campaign highlights something LGBTQ+ marketers have understood for a long time: q***r audiences don’t exist in one place, and they don’t engage like mainstream audiences either.

A lot of brands and organisations still approach LGBTQ+ marketing as a visibility exercise during Pride or as a demographic targeting challenge. In reality, it’s much more nuanced than that.

Platforms like Grindr, Reddit, Discord or niche online communities work because they’re spaces where identity, culture and lived experience naturally intersect. That changes how messaging is received.

The strongest campaigns in LGBTQ+ spaces are rarely the loudest or the most performative. They’re usually the ones that understand context, community behaviours and the responsibility that comes with showing up in those environments.

Let's talk about NYC Pride for a second.

Mastercard, Target, Garnier, and Skyy Vodka have all pulled their sponsorship this year, leaving a $750,000 shortfall. It's a significant gap, and it matters.

What also matters: L'Oréal didn't go anywhere. Platinum sponsors last year, and again this year. That consistency means something.

Pride is bigger than any brand, but the festivities rely on corporate support. If you're able to donate, buy a ticket, or encourage the brands you love to show up, the time is now.

The Scottish Greens’ use of Grindr ads during the election campaign has sparked an interesting conversation around how political parties engage LGBTQ+ audiences online.

For years, q***r audiences have been difficult to reach through traditional ad targeting, especially as major platforms reduced identity-based targeting options.

What works now is less about precision targeting and more about cultural fluency. Understanding the audience, the space and the community matters far more than simply accessing it.
