There’s been no real movement on further incomings at Leeds United at this stage, according to Phil Hay of The Athletic.

Leeds, having completed the signing of Joel Robles this week, took their total number of incomings to eight for the summer – Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca, Tyler Adams, Luis Sinisterra, Darko Gyabi, Sonny Perkins, and Robles.

The Whites’ lack of depth in both the striker and left-back positions is no secret, and Leeds are said to hold an interest in recruiting further within these two positions but may have to wait for options to open up within the market.

According to Hay in The Athletic: “There is a sense Leeds are sitting tight and biding their time, undecided yet about whether they will push the boat out and get an extra attacking addition over the line.”

He added on Twitter: “No real movement on further incomings at Leeds United at this stage but in terms of the past 24 hours – [Juan] Mata, [Ismaila] Sarr, and [Joao] Pedro all wide of the mark.”

This follows on from Andrea Radrizzani’s comments last week about the club, ‘actively monitoring and discussing [forwards]. With other players, unless we are 100 percent that we improve, we don’t move’.

Reading between the lines, it feels as though the club are content with their business and will only move on targets should a very good opportunity arise – one which cannot be turned down.

Quiz: 15 questions about Leeds United’s Joel Robles – Can you score 100%?

Leeds’ injury issues last season were well documented. Despite the signings so far, a bigger squad churn felt necessary this summer.

Patrick Bamford missed the majority of the season with injury, and Junior Firpo was constantly in and out with smaller niggles. Recruitment in these two positions is imperative and shouldn’t hinge on waiting on good market opportunities. We must be proactive.

If the club fails to recruit in these areas, then they will again show themselves to be negligent. This summer is the opportunity to correct the mistakes of a lack of recruitment last summer, and the trajectory has been good so far. The club should keep the momentum going with two final signings.

Leeds United are reportedly still monitoring Philadelphia Union left-back Kai Wagner, should they need to sign someone for that position.

The Whites have two positions still lacking a great deal of depth as we head into the second gameweek of the Premier League season.

Junior Firpo’s injury meant that Leeds started their season without a recognised left-back as Pascal Struijk filled in against Wolves.

Suggestions from Jesse Marsch back in July outlined that Leeds could be in the market for a player in that position, despite emerging claims from Phil Hay this morning that the club are happy with Firpo’s recovery progress.

Should the question be asked of Victor Orta of signing a player to cover the position alongside the former Barcelona man, Philadelphia Union’s Kai Wagner appears to be on the shortlist – according to journalist Manuel Veth:

Interest from elsewhere remains for the 25-year-old, and while there is no offer on the table from Leeds a move could materialise.

Wagner is valued at ?2.7million (Transfermarkt) and has five assists in 24 MLS appearances this season.

Wait and see.

With the left-back situation, I think it’s fair to see Firpo as the first choice for the position, but to think we are sufficiently covered for the season is just incorrect.

We can’t rely on playing a centre-back out of position every time Firpo is absent, which is very often – six absences from injuries, suspensions, and fitness issues already since he joined last summer.

It doesn’t have to be someone that can usurp Firpo as the starting option, but we need to have someone in there who can offer competition to him, as well as put in a strong performance when he’s not there.

Wagner might be that player, but a signing doesn’t look totally likely right now.

Leeds United players react to Helder Costa’s Elland Road departure

Junior Firpo was expected to be out for around two months but the player appears to be ahead of schedule and closing in on a Leeds United return.

The Spaniard missed the start of the season through injury, with centre-back Pascal Struijk deputising in his stead.

Jesse Marsch revealed in his press conference last week that the player is still out but scans showed he was ahead of schedule from the initial pre-season prognosis and is potentially only two weeks away from being match ready.

Firpo’s fitness could mean Leeds’ search for a left-back is placed on pause. Phil Hay, speaking in The Athletic said: “There is a clamour for a left-back too but Junior Firpo is close to recovering from a pre-season hip injury and the club have not moved on that front, despite indicating in July that they were considering signing competition at his position.”

It seems now as though the club are happy with the options they have, with Firpo, Struijk and Leo Hjelde as the current primary options at left-back until January. By which time, we may begin to see the return of Stuart Dallas back into the first-team fold.

Quiz: Are these 15 statements about Leeds United’s Junior Firpo true or false?

1 of 15

Junior Firpo started his senior career at Barcelona.

Personally, given Firpo’s persistent injury issues, I would not take the chance of waiting until January for Dallas’ return and would instead add in some much-needed competition now.

Hjelde and Struijk are centre-backs by trade, and even if both have adequately filled the role at times, it is not something we should rely on in case of any long term injury to our only recognised first-team left-back.

Firpo’s body cannot be trusted to hold up, it would be negligent of the club to ignore this and not recruit further in a position where we lack recognised depth.

Will Firpo make a bigger impact for Leeds next season?

Here are the latest and the Saints have announced that their stadium will be at reduced capacity for the fixture.

Southampton are starting the season by reducing capacity in two blocks of St Mary’s Stadium to combat anti-social behaviour. The two blocks nearest to where the Leeds fans will be housed have been reduced to 75 per cent capacity.

Many clubs across up and down the country saw an increase in fan behaviour problems last season, and new action is now being taken to try and tackle anti-social behaviour at football games.

In July, the Premier League, FA and EFL came together to discuss issues such as the rise in fans entering the pitch without permission, carrying or using smoke bombs or pyrotechnics and throwing objects.

A message sent to Southampton fans with season tickets in that area of the ground reads: “To ensure we can continue to offer a safe, accessible stadium that all of our fans can enjoy, we wanted to make you aware of some changes you’ll notice when you come to St Mary’s this season that have been made following conversations with the local authorities.

“These changes have been made following a season when throughout football we witnessed a disappointing increase in anti-social behaviour. The Premier League have recently launched a league-wide campaign designed to raise awareness of the consequences of this anti-social behaviour, and we are committed to working with the Premier League and local authorities to ensure Southampton Football Club remains the family-friendly venue we pride ourselves on.”

Joao Pedro is the latest striker to be linked with a move to Leeds United this summer.

Leeds have got a lot of their business done early this summer, preparing Jesse Marsch’s squad well for the Premier League season.

However, there’s still a shortage of striking options at Elland Road, which is fuelling transfer speculation.

As per a report from TuttoMercatoWeb, Leeds are interested in a loan move for Joao Pedro at Watford, alongside the striker’s teammate, Ismaila Sarr.

Pedro is the more central of the two players, with the 20-year-old’s strengths coming through the middle.

Last season in the Premier League, the young Brazilian scored three goals for Watford, who were relegated.

The year prior to that, he struck nine goals and registered two assists, helping the Hornets to promotion out of the Championship. He’s already off the mark in the current campaign, scoring Watford’s winner in their 1-0 victory over Sheffield United on the opening weekend.

Quiz: 15 questions about Leeds United’s Joel Robles – Can you score 100%?

It’s worth noting here that Leeds appear to be biding their time with transfers and links to Pedro (and Sarr) might not be as genuine as they seem from this report.

However, you’ve got to say that Pedro in particular would be an interesting addition.

The 20-year-old has real potential and that sell-on value that Leeds have looked for previously in the window.

Pedro can play through the middle as a 9 or a 10 and fits what Leeds should be looking at.

It might be a case that this is something they consider later in the window, given the profile of the player.

Contrasting reports have emerged over the past 24 hours regarding Leeds United’s reported move for Watford’s Ismaila Sarr.

The Whites are arguably two signings away from concluding all of their transfer business for the summer window.

One of the areas they need to focus on is the attacking department, potentially signing a new striker to add further depth behind the likes of Patrick Bamford and co.

Yesterday evening, it was reported by Santi Aouna that Leeds were close to finalising an agreement to sign Watford’s Ismaila Sarr.

The winger has a goal and an assist to his name already in this Championship season as his goal against West Brom caught the eye on Monday, scoring from his own half:

These claims have been backed up by Nicolo Schira, who has reported Leeds’ offer totalled EUR28million with a five-year-deal on the table.

However, these reports have now been cooled by LeedsLive’s Beren Cross:

“Links with Ismaila Sarr hardened on the continent last night, but LeedsLive understands he is not likely to be someone United buys this summer.”

Leeds win

We can hope.

Sarr would be a very solid addition to the side, but you would have to wonder how that would work if claims about losing a player first are to be believed.

We can’t really afford to let any first-team players go before the end of the window.

I would love for us to sign Sarr as an addition to what we already have, but we can’t have one in and one out.

He’s definitely one to watch before the end of the month because movement in any capacity wouldn’t shock me with the Senegal international.
