A Michelin star is named after the tyre company. Same Michelin.

In 1900 there were fewer than 3,000 cars in all of France. Two tyre makers had a problem — nobody was driving, so nobody was wearing out tyres. So they printed a free guide telling drivers where to eat.

One star: very good. Two stars: worth a detour. Three stars: worth a special journey.

The most prestigious award in food is graded in driving distance.

They didn’t outspend anyone. They just made the road worth driving.

Everyone in marketing knows the New Coke story. Almost everyone tells it wrong.

The version you’ve heard is that in 1985 Coca-Cola stopped listening to their customers. The opposite is true. They listened harder than any company in history had ever listened.

Before changing the formula, Coca-Cola ran blind taste tests on 190,000 people — the largest consumer research project anyone had attempted at that point. The new formula didn’t just win. It beat original Coke, and it beat Pepsi. The data was rigorous, and the data was accurate.

Within weeks of launch, the company was taking thousands of calls a day. Coca-Cola couldn’t work out what had hit them, so they brought in psychologists to analyse the complaint calls and explain their own customers to them. What came back was that people weren’t annoyed or inconvenienced. They were talking the way people talk about a bereavement.

About a soft drink.

Seventy-nine days later, the original formula was back.

Here’s the part worth sitting with: the research wasn’t wrong. The new formula genuinely did taste better. They asked 190,000 people a question and got a perfectly accurate answer. It just wasn’t the question that mattered.
Coca-Cola had spent a century building something they had never once measured — because nothing they owned could measure it. It wasn’t in the taste tests. It wasn’t on the balance sheet. Nobody in that building could have told you how big it was. They only found out how big it was by taking it away.

Every dashboard you own answers the question you already knew to ask. That’s all any of them can do.

The research wasn’t wrong. It just measured the wrong thing.

If you’ve ever sat on hold for an hour, been passed between departments, or been told “there’s nothing we can do” — you know that feeling. Most of us just get mad and move on. Dave didn’t. He turned frustration into something people couldn’t look away from, and the world listened.

That’s the part worth remembering: companies move fast when the whole internet is watching. You don’t need a record deal or a viral gimmick — you need to actually say something, publicly, where it can’t be ignored.

If you’ve had bad service recently, here’s what actually works:

• Post publicly (X, TikTok, Instagram, Google review) — not just a support DM. Public complaints get resolved faster than private ones.
• Tag the company directly and be specific about what happened.
• Keep it short, honest, and calm — Dave’s video worked because it was funny, not furious.
• Give them a real chance to respond before you post — but don’t let it disappear into a call center queue forever.

Know someone who’s dealing with terrible service right now and just venting about it? Send them this. Sometimes all it takes is watching someone else do it to realize you can too.

Threads might be one of the biggest overlooked opportunities for businesses right now.

It took Instagram around 2½ years to reach the number of users Threads has attracted in a fraction of that time.

Yet compared with LinkedIn and other established platforms, it still feels remarkably unsaturated.

That creates an interesting window for SMEs.

Less competition for attention.
More opportunity to build an audience organically.
And a platform that actually rewards joining conversations rather than simply broadcasting your own content.

In this video, I share 3 things I think businesses should be doing on Threads now — including why spending just 10–15 minutes a day there could be worthwhile.

I don’t think Threads should replace LinkedIn.

But I do think ignoring it completely could turn out to be a missed opportunity.

Are you using Threads for your business yet — or are you still unconvinced?
