Most Ecommerce store owners we speak to have almost always been trained to use paid advertising like Google Shopping and Facebook Ads to get people to click through to their store.

Whilst there is little doubt there is no faster way to target new audiences, get your message out and (potentially) scale your business quickly, relying solely on paid advertising is extremely risky.

With ever changing (and what some may consider less than transparent) ad policies, these platforms can play god with your business.

If youโ€™re running paid advertising most likely the biggest variable cost of your store will be your ad spend.

For example, if your ads are delivering a CPA of $50 and you sell 100 units per month directly from ads you will be spending $5000 on ads.

If you want to 10x the number of items you sell (assuming your CPA doesnโ€™t shift) youโ€™ll need to spend $50,000.

With SEO the traffic you generate organically from the search engines is not linked linearly to your investment.

As an example, a client of ours investing $2000 per month in SEO may see their traffic increase from 100 visitors in month 1, to 1000 in month 3, 2000 in month 6 and over 4000 in month 12.

All the while their investment and cost to their business does not increase as their sales do.

The more traffic you can drive to your website organically from Google, the more long term profit you can achieve without ad spend.

They go to your site, see the item, read the description but decide it isnโ€™t actually something they need right now and itโ€™s not definitely not cheap enough to buy for the sake of it.

So they leave your store never to be seen again.

Now instead consider someone who just broke their survival knife and needs to purchase a new one right now.

They open their browser, go to Google, search โ€œBuy Survival Knifeโ€ and (because you worked with us) your site turns up at the top of the organic results)...

(They ignore the paid results because โ€˜everyone knows they just paid to be thereโ€™)

โ€ฆAnd click through to your website.

They find exactly what they want and complete the purchase with no thought of shopping around on price or looking for discounts.

So where as you can reach more people with social media ad, their disruptive marketing nature means they have no solid purchase intent and unless you make an exceptional offer (usually an unsustainable heavy discount) your conversion rate will be much lower.

Organic high intent traffic from the search engines, although maybe limited somewhat in volume, can provide just as many or even more sales.

In this post we'll show you the strategies we put in place to maximise sale value and increase customer lifetime value.

Now weโ€™ve plugged some of the holes and increased the conversion rate to initial sale, we want to maximise the purchase and increase the lifetime value of each customer.

The easiest way to do this is by cross-selling & upselling - Statistics show you can expect to increase your average revenue by around 15% just by doing this.

When a visitor adds one of your products to their cart and shows interest in spending money with you, we look to capitalise on the opportunity to make more sales by setting up your store to offer them related products.

Then once a customer has completed the initial checkout, we use a combination of cross sells and upsell product recommendations with urgency timers on the โ€˜thank youโ€™ page to maximise the total transaction.

You can use an app to complete the additional purchase with โ€˜one-clickโ€™ to remove any friction.

By optimising an email list you can then extract more revenue per customer from those that have purchased previously, nurture subscribers who havenโ€™t purchased yet until they are ready to do so and even gain new customers through referrals.

Our clientโ€™s businesses get anywhere between 20 to 50% of their overall revenue from email alone, mainly by upping the repeat purchase rate.

The first step is of course to collect email addresses and subscribers who consent to receiving regular emails from you.

Having email subscribers who have opted in to your list and are interested in your product, means youโ€™re always able to get repeat customers.

Better yet, you have full control of your email list, whereas as we have discussed you have no control over the advertising platforms.
We build our clientโ€™s lists through:

Your storeโ€™s conversion rate is a measure of how many visitors actually make a purchase. You can see yours by going to โ€œAnalyticsโ€ in the Shopify dashboard and youโ€™ll see the 4th chart โ€œOnline store conversion rateโ€

To give you a rough idea of where youโ€™re at right now in 2021 the average conversion rate across all segments of all ecommerce markets was 1.97%.

A higher conversion rate means the cost per acquisition or CPA of a new customer is lower ie You get more sales for your investment into marketing.

To improve this for our clients we optimise the store to entice more new visitors to make a purchase and then use apps and automations to plug any leaks where store visitors drop off before completing their purchase.
