Without any traffic it doesnโt matter how good your conversion rate or the strategies you have in place to upsell, cross sell and earn referrals.
Which is why we canโt overstate how crucial to your business it is to have reliable sources of traffic that will not be shut down overnight.

Most Ecommerce store owners we speak to have almost always been trained to use paid advertising like Google Shopping and Facebook Ads to get people to click through to their store.
Whilst there is little doubt there is no faster way to target new audiences, get your message out and (potentially) scale your business quickly, relying solely on paid advertising is extremely risky.
With ever changing (and what some may consider less than transparent) ad policies, these platforms can play god with your business.
I have personally woken up to advertising rights restricted and even entire accounts completely banned, with no explanation given which is increasingly common with advertisers on the platform.
No ads used to mean no traffic for me.
And no traffic and sales meant I had to find a way to get ads going again quickly or Iโd be out of business!

Something we havenโt touched on yet is the โVariable Costsโ part of our store performance equation - Variable Costs are expenses that change in proportion to how much your store sells.
If youโre running paid advertising most likely the biggest variable cost of your store will be your ad spend.
For example, if your ads are delivering a CPA of $50 and you sell 100 units per month directly from ads you will be spending $5000 on ads.
If you want to 10x the number of items you sell (assuming your CPA doesnโt shift) youโll need to spend $50,000.
With SEO the traffic you generate organically from the search engines is not linked linearly to your investment.
As an example, a client of ours investing $2000 per month in SEO may see their traffic increase from 100 visitors in month 1, to 1000 in month 3, 2000 in month 6 and over 4000 in month 12.
All the while their investment and cost to their business does not increase as their sales do.
The more traffic you can drive to your website organically from Google, the more long term profit you can achieve without ad spend.

You will have to invest initially and it can take some time for you to hit the first page but in the long term there is really nothing more reliable and effective.

Now, maybe at this point you like the sound of SEO for your store and youโve done some keyword research and see there are only 500 searches for your products each month.
Perhaps you think โthat all sounds great, but I get 2000 clicks a month from my social media adsโ...
This is where purchase intent is key.
Picture someone on their favourite social media platform looking at what friends and family are doing, perhaps stalking their ex or participating in their favourite groupโฆ
All of a sudden your ad pops up for โThe Number 1 Survival Knifeโ
The user thinks โI wouldnโt mind a new survival knife, after all my main interests are hunting and survival. Iโll check it outโ
They go to your site, see the item, read the description but decide it isnโt actually something they need right now and itโs not definitely not cheap enough to buy for the sake of it.
So they leave your store never to be seen again.
Now instead consider someone who just broke their survival knife and needs to purchase a new one right now.
They open their browser, go to Google, search โBuy Survival Knifeโ and (because you worked with us) your site turns up at the top of the organic results)...
(They ignore the paid results because โeveryone knows they just paid to be thereโ)
โฆAnd click through to your website.
They find exactly what they want and complete the purchase with no thought of shopping around on price or looking for discounts.
So where as you can reach more people with social media ad, their disruptive marketing nature means they have no solid purchase intent and unless you make an exceptional offer (usually an unsustainable heavy discount) your conversion rate will be much lower.
Organic high intent traffic from the search engines, although maybe limited somewhat in volume, can provide just as many or even more sales.
