One of the biggest messaging mistakes startups make?
👉 Not having a consistent story across every team.

Here’s what usually happens:
❌ Marketing crafts a narrative (in its own little bubble).
❌ Sales runs with a completely different talk track.
❌ Product and customer success tell yet another version of the story.

The result? Confusion - for both your team and your customers.

In an ideal world, there would be one central source of truth for messaging. A core set of key messages that every team can pull from and adapt as needed.

But the real question is... where should that messaging actually live?

If it’s buried in a marketing doc (inside a folder, inside another folder, inside yet another folder in Google Drive)...
🚨 No one will ever look at it.
If you hand it off to sales or another team, and it ends up buried in a random deck or project management tool...
🚨 Same problem.

So, what’s the best solution? Put it on your website.

ESPECIALLY the homepage.

Here’s why:
✅ It’s cross-functional by nature—everyone has input.
✅ It’s public-facing and easy to find.
âś… If customers can access it in seconds, your team should be able to as well!

Make your messaging accessible. If it’s easy to find, it’s easy to stay aligned. 🚀

Why your marketing isn’t landing?

Because you’re building it upside down.

Here’s how it usually goes:

Jump straight into tactics like SEO and ads

Write vague messaging that doesn’t resonate

Try to retro-fit it to an audience

Realise you don’t actually have a clear customer profile or value proposition

“Let’s just make it green because that’s our brand colour”

And then it flops. Every time.

Why? Because you're ignoring the marketing foundations.

Think of it like a pyramid — if something’s not working at the top, the issue usually lives further down.

Let’s say outbound isn’t converting. Ask yourself:
- Do we have the right process?
- Is the messaging clear and compelling?
- Do we even know who our ideal customer is?
- Have we nailed our value proposition?
- Does our brand stand out?

The same logic applies to every channel — paid ads, SEO, newsletters, partnerships. All of it.

To fix this, flip your approach.

Start from the base:
- Brand – What makes us different?
- Ideal Customer – Who exactly are we helping?
- Pain Points – What problems are they facing?
- Value Proposition – How do we solve them better than anyone else?

Once you have clarity on those, then build outward:
- Strong copy
- Smart team structure
- Tools and systems
- Go-to-market strategy

Then finally, bring in tactics like ads, content, SEO and partnerships.

And here’s the kicker — those tactics will now give you valuable feedback to improve your positioning, messaging, and even product.

It’s easy to blame the tools or the market. But in most cases, the real issue is much deeper.
