“Ethiopians Should Never Ask the U.S. to Pick between Egypt and Ethiopia”

Tibor Nagy, Trump’s former Africa envoy, speaks out on the developments in the Horn

A new era of ‘transactional diplomacy’ is sweeping through the world, and the volatile Horn of Africa and Red Sea corridor are proving no exception. The old rules no longer seem to apply.

Developments ranging from Israel’s strategic positioning to President Isaias Afwerki’s ‘signaled desire’ to mend fences with Washington. Further, President Trump’s apparent tilt toward Cairo—at the expense of Ethiopia’s interests—appears more pronounced than ever. Amidst this turbulence, PM Abiy Ahmed’s administration has been attempting to diversify Ethiopia’s allies, a strategy often characterized by engaging fierce rivals simultaneously.

In this complex equation of shifting variables, who wins and who loses? What is the likely trajectory of these developments? How far will President Trump go to back Cairo’s interests, and how might his administration’s involvement reshape the Greater Horn and the Red Sea corridor?

The Reporter’s Bewket Abebe spoke with Tibor Nagy, the former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. A veteran diplomat who served as the U.S. Ambassador to several countries, including Ethiopia, Nagy was also acting Under Secretary of State for Management during the second Trump administration. He is widely recognized for his deep interest in and unique perspective on the region’s diplomatic landscape.

Architects reveals International Airport in

UK studio Zaha Hadid Architects has begun construction of an airport in the city of Bishoftu, Ethiopia, which is being billed as "the largest aviation infrastructure project in Africa's history".
Named Bishoftu International Airport (BIA), the terminal is being built 40 kilometers south of the capital Addis Abeba and is hoped to become Africa's global aviation hub.

"Bishoftu International Airport is a visionary project for Ethiopia and Africa as a whole," said Zaha Hadid Architects' director of aviation Cristiano Ceccato de Sabata.

"Airports bring people together and bridge national divides. Zaha Hadid Architects is honored to be part of its development – connecting every region of the continent as Africa's global gateway."

BIA's first phase is scheduled to open in 2030, operated by the carrier Ethiopian Airlines.

This phase will comprise a 660,000-square-metre terminal and two runways that serve 60 million passengers annually. This number is expected to increase to 110 million passengers once the airport is completed with four runways and parking for 270 aircraft.

"Bishoftu International Airport will be the largest aviation infrastructure project in Africa's history, more than four times the capacity of Ethiopia's current main airport, which will reach its limits on existing traffic in the next two to three years,” said Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.

According to Zaha Hadid Architects, the terminal is designed to achieve LEED Gold – the second-highest certification level awarded by the US Green Building Council.

Natural ventilation and solar shading will be utilized throughout, while photovoltaic arrays will contribute to the terminal's energy demands. The project will be complete with stormwater channels that direct to newly created wetlands and bioswales. Via ~ Addis Standard

Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Launches “Pulse of Africa” Media Platform

Addis Ababa, October 7, 2025 (POA) — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has launched Pulse of Africa (POA), a pan-African media platform designed to reshape global narratives about Africa.

He said the initiative marks a key step in countering negative portrayals and promoting Africa’s true potential.

“Pulse of Africa is a humble but significant beginning—set to grow into a leading continental media platform,” Abiy noted, adding that Africa is on track to become a global industrial and media powerhouse.

🌼 Happy Irreechaa 2025!

Irreechaa — the Oromo thanksgiving — is shining brighter than ever! Once a local celebration, it has now become a national and global festival of peace, gratitude, and unity.

This year, people from every corner of Ethiopia joined the joyful gatherings at Hora Finfinnee (Addis Ababa) and Hora Arsadee (Bishooftuu) — wearing their colourful traditional attires, singing, dancing, and celebrating together in harmony.

It was truly heartwarming to see tourists from across the world wearing Oromo traditional clothes and accessories, capturing the beauty of our culture and the spirit of togetherness.

While a few still misunderstand it, calling it witchcraft, the truth is clear — Irreechaa is a sacred day of thanksgiving to Waaqa (God), just like Thanksgiving in the USA or UK. It’s a celebration of life, love, and unity — a symbol that brings all nations and peoples together.

It’s not only an Oromo festival — it’s now Ethiopia’s festival of peace, gratitude, and unity.

Here’s a rewritten version of the article about Ethiopia’s GERD:

Ethiopia Inaugurates Africa’s Largest Hydroelectric Dam

Ethiopia has officially inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the continent’s largest hydroelectric project, marking a milestone in its pursuit of energy independence and regional influence. While the project promises electricity for millions of Ethiopians, it continues to heighten tensions with downstream Egypt, which fears for its share of Nile waters.

Home to over 120 million people, Ethiopia views the $5 billion (£3.7bn) GERD, built on the Blue Nile, as a cornerstone of its economic future. Since the first turbine was activated in 2022, the dam’s output has steadily grown, now reaching its full generating capacity of 5,150 megawatts—placing it among the 20 largest hydroelectric dams worldwide, though still only about a quarter the size of China’s Three Gorges Dam.

The inauguration ceremony took place in Guba, where a fighter jet soared above the cascading waters plunging 170 metres (558ft). Beneath a stage canopy designed in the shape of Ethiopia and coloured in the national flag, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressed a gathering of dignitaries, including the presidents of Somalia, Djibouti, and Kenya.

“To our brothers in Sudan and Egypt, Ethiopia built this dam not to cause harm, but to bring prosperity—electrifying the region and reshaping the history of Africa’s people,” Abiy declared.

Ethiopia plans to use the power generated to expand electricity access domestically while exporting surplus energy to neighbouring countries, positioning GERD as both a symbol of national pride and a driver of regional development.
