Guilt is a very complex emotion unique to humans. Animals are able to make a "guilty look", because then the owner reacts to the situation as the pet would like. The dog perfectly understands that he will be punished for bad behavior. If you sigh sadly, look piteously, or guiltily bury your face in a person's lap, the punishment will not be so strong, or maybe even not at all.
