“mongrel” - that’s what I was called at today's London rally.
I attended the “Unite the Kingdom” march wearing my journalist’s hat to observe and report on it.
It began in a relatively calm, even upbeat way. The crowd of 60,000 people made a lot of noise, of course, but it was in a relatively convivial manner.
But the tone shifted as the day progressed and some people became more liberated with the copious alcohol they'd been consuming.
The atmosphere became more aggressive, more confrontational. And eventually that hostility was directed at me, as the only ethnic minority individual reporting on the event.
Racial slurs. Repeated. Unprovoked.
At that point, I thought it was wise I left the increasingly-antagonistic environment.
This footage shows my highlights of today's demo. As you can see, most people seemed to be well-meaning and wanted to air their grievances in a non-hostile way, but, as is often the case at any type of large political rally, there is a minority that want to stir up trouble and grab much of the attention.
For what it's worth, as a proud Brit, I think we should unite as a people and not let the extremists and fanatics on *any* side set the agenda. Worryingly, it is increasingly becoming the case. We are called the United Kingdom for a reason. Our nation will continue to flounder if we don't meet in the middle, serving a common purpose in making this once again the incredible nation it used to be
