📢 A message for my entrepreneurs and solopreneur friends out there!

Yep, this hits hard, but it’s the BEST advice I can give you in the currents times we live in.

And I’m not gonna lie.

It’s not easy and never has been easy to build a business, but it’s even harder now because of AI and all the other automated technologies - because you have two schools of people, which are:

1. The ones who use AI 100% of the time and literally churn out content left, right, centre, attacking the “volume” metrics (which is, sadly, currently winning in the algorithm stakes.)

2. The people who maintain their humanity and consider the needs of their customers first (basically what us marketeers were taught in our studies and which still matters hugely today - even more so than before if you ask me.)

And let me clear. No matter where the digital landscape goes - the winners out of this are the ones who consistently put their audience first (not the bots!)

I can categorically say this without any doubt in my heart folks - this is the bread and butter of business, and without it, no amount of automation will work.

I know what it feels like to hide.

To smile and nod when you don't understand something.
To be too scared to ask because you don't want to look stupid.
To leave a conversation more confused than when you started.

I've seen it from both sides: As someone working in healthcare for 15 years (true millenial y'all) before getting into marketing, I've seen patients pretend they understand something, but the look on their faces shared a different story.

Here's what I know for certain: Authenticity creates connection. Performance destroys it.

When brands hide behind 'jargon' or complex language, they're performing.

Trying to look credible. Sound good. Seem professional to match up to the competition.

But real people don't connect with performance.
They connect with honesty, authenticity, with brands that talk like humans.

That's why connection matters so much to me.
Because I've been on the receiving end of marketing that made me feel stupid.

I promised myself: I'd never write words that makes someone feel that way.

And that's why every word I write, I ask: "Would this make someone feel understood? Or make them feel small?"

Connection isn't a marketing tactic friends, believe me.
It's respect - pure and simple.

Marketing should never feel manipulative.

Here’s my now not-so-secret 5-part 'human-tone' checklist to tick off before you hit publish:

1) Truth: Is what you're saying real, truthful, and in tune with the needs of your client/customer?

2) Clarity: Would a stranger understand what you do in 3 seconds?

3) Empathy: Does this speak to what your client is feeling, not just what you sell?

4) Invitation: Are you starting a conversation?

5) Consistency: Could you repeat this style weekly without burning out?

Human-first doesn’t mean soft or passive or boring. Far from it!
It means sustainable.
And trust-building.
And nicer to buy from.

Been thinking a lot lately about marketing (probs cos' its my job and cos I'm on holiday 😅 )

But don't you think a lot of it has just started to feel cold? 🥶 (Marketing I mean, not the holiday 🤭 )

Words like:

"Leverage cutting-edge solutions."
"Industry-leading platform."
"Innovative ecosystem."
"Best-in-class"
"World-class"
"Award-winning"
"Revolutionary"
"Game-changing"

Seriously, when was the last time you heard someone talk like that in real life?

No, you didn’t, I know. Because real people don’t say those things.

Yet the second people sit down to write words, they forget how to sound human.

Human-ness swaps into cleverness or "good sounding-ness"
Simple words become 'impressive copy' (give me strength)

Yet here’s your problem: Your customers don’t need to be impressed by your vocab.

They need to understand:

What do YOU do?
Why SHOULD they care?

That - is - it - in - a - nutshell.
That’s the whole game.
No more to it!

I mean, I can categorically say without an inch of doubt in my veins that YOU are overcomplicating your marketing, massively.

Re-read that previous paragraph, go for a walk, and mull it over. That's all there is to it y'all!

Sound human.
